Winmau Stratos 23g darts review

Many thanks to Winmau for supplying these darts for a prize for DODL Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

These are Dual Density darts which mean these have 2 different levels of tungsten in one barrel. At the front it is 95% and the rear is 85% this is to effectively give you a front weighted dart in what is a very near straight barrel design (it is tapered slightly).

They have a black Onyx coating.

You can find more info on Winmau's site here: Stratos

The darts retail around £50 and they come in some attractively styled packaging which has a hinged flap held down by a small magnet and when opened you can see the contents through a window. Inside the box there is a foam insert which slides out and has the darts, stems and flights held neatly in place.

The stems are medium nylons with spring clips and the "Stratos" logo printed on, the flights are standard Rhino thick flights in the "Stratos" themed livery which all matches up very nicely to the striking styling of the darts. There is a nicely machined alloy disc point protector too.

If you look below you can read the back of the packaging which describes the thinking behind the Dual Density barrels.

The darts are very striking looking with the black onyx coating and the yellow rings. The whole set up with the stems and flights give them a really nice overall look. The grip is a kind of double ring style and I would say its borderline between a high medium and high level grip, plenty grippy for me but I think as the rings are fairly close spaced not as gippy as it would have been with wider gaps.

WEIGHT:

All 3 barrels were pretty close just 3 hundredths of a gram difference between lightest and heaviest:

BALANCE:

The balance with nothing attached was towards the front as expected:

With the supplied set up it moved closer to the middle:

Balance with my own medium, short and extra short nylon stems and standard flights:

My grip with these darts:

Darts seemed to land at pretty much the same upward angle:

CONCLUSION:

Well I quite like these darts really. There is something about them that makes them nice to throw and I thought overall they seemed to fly very well with my front grip. How much of it is down to the specific design of the darts and the Dual Density idea I cant really say but they did feel very nice to throw and seemed to keep a steady flight path.

When you hold the darts in your fingers you can definitely feel that the front is heavier and when throwing the dart it kind of feels like I am throwing a shorter dart, hard to explain but I think it could be of the way the weight feels.

The only thing I did notice on some throws and probably because I was just getting used to them is that they seemed to dip a little quicker than expected, but mostly they behaved very well Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I have ordered some in 22g now as after trying these I have a slight suspicion that the 22g may suit me even more.

The quality of the darts is very good and the styling just looks great!

I do think the coating will likely chip and wear to some degree but that is to be expected.

I did have a throw from the rear and was surprised to see the darts keep a very straight line although my height was off but they did seem just as nicely balanced even though its not my natural grip, so its possible they may work well for rear grippers too.

But I think us front grippers have a very nice dart here and I am anxious to try the 22g model now!

SUMMARY RATINGS:

Looks: 9 (very striking looking darts)
Grip: 8 (on a 1 to 10 Scale, 10 been severe grip)
Weight match: 8 (quite close)
Quality: 8.5 (very nice quality)
Value: 7 (ok price)
Suitability for me: 8.5 (overall I liked how they throw with my front grip)

Best Feature: The Dual Density (tough one to pick but as its the main selling point I think it may have something) Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Yeah with the 23g I am not sure how much the shape is adding to that front weighted feeling but I think a more straight barrel will be the better test of the Dual Density design. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.
