Lately I have been noticing that other smarter players, not necessarily more skilled get some form of sponsorship from Flight & Shaft manufacturers, dart suppliers, local businesses. I suspect that I need some education in this area of darting.
I live in Northern part of Canada and hotels and travel/airfair are fees that I just sucked up and pay out of pocket ... but I see fellas who seem to be be getting some compensation. How can I get me some of that ?

Show up at the big tournaments and make a name for yourself. Be ranked by one of the known north american organizations... THEN contact some manufacturers and see if they would like to have YOUR name on their products... a little reverse psychology...
oh, and a lot of luck.

Also, sometimes a 'well written' email or letter to a company may get you something - maybe not a full blown sponsorship but freebies to try out/ review for them.

I'm looking into this myself. As i would like to play more tournament play and get ranked in the US. I actually just found out about this because i play in local tourneys with someone who is sponsored by a big company. And get to play I just about every ADO ranked tourney in the states.

The thing most don't understand about sponsorship in the U.S., these companies are not giving you cash to go to tournaments. Why would they? There's very little money to be made, there is nothing in it for them. Almost all sponsored players in the U.S. are product sponsorships, meaning they get some darts and equipment not cash. I have friends that are sponsored by Monster, Dynasty, Lstyle, Cosmo and even Target- they get no cash to go to tournaments. Maybe the top 5 guys, you know who they are get some funds but it's for entry fees not travel expenses

The person I'm speaking of way is paid.... they are only 19-20 years old. No way they could afford to travel as much.
