HOWARD COSELL DARTBOARD
American football fans - flashback to the 70's. Are you old enough to remember Howard Cosell broadcasting the ABC Monday Night Football games? He was also well know for broadcasting on ABC's Wide World Of Sports and professional boxing matches (Muhammad Ali era).Basically got kicked off the air for his racial slurs "look at the little monkey run" while announcing a football game.

This is an all cork dartboard in mint condition. Apparently it was owned by someone's father who worked with the broadcasting crew. They had these made up.

I remember him quite well. He seemed the pompous, irritating sort to me and I loved it when he and Ali were together. Ali would make moves to take off that ridiculous wig Cosell wore, but he'd always stop short of actually doing it.

As for the "look at that little monkey run" comment, I was watching that game when he made that statement and after years of watching and listening to Cosell, I knew he wasn't a prejudiced person and was a huge supporter of black athletes, but his choice of wording was all wrong. With the climate oft the times, that was the end of his broadcasting career on Monday Night Football.

At least he wasn't as crazy as Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder when he went on a tangent on why black athletes were superior to whites. He rambled on how slave owners bred the biggest, strongest buck to a suitable woman and therefore passed on superior genes and the offspring could run faster, work harder, jump higher, etc. You just knew his career was imploding on air and sure enough, he was cut loose by the station is quick time.

Since it's a dartboard and a lot of people didn't like the guy....I'm guessing they enhanced certain features (possibly due to his ethnic background).

Interesting part of history though...bet it's worth some money to the right collectors.

I would not think of him being racist either, especially with him being a big Ali fan. He was just loose with his words.

I have not seen a Jimmy The Greek dartboard yet but I'm sure there is one out there. I have several other dartboards of people that had targets on their head.

Darren - go on You Tube and listen to how he talked. It would drive anyone nuts. He was a real character.

Cosell was definitely arrogant and obnoxious and he had a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. A lot of people didn’t like him at all. Nonetheless, he was the leading pro football sportscaster in the US for many years and he was one of the main forces that built Monday Night Football into the institution that it became. That having being said, I’m surprised that dartboard was a limited edition, private thing. Somebody could have made millions with that idea!
