I think every outshot chart say go T17 first dart to leave D8.
Hit a single 17 no worries, a single 10 leaves a dart at tops.
BUT miss to either side and hit a 2 or a 3 it leaves you on 64 or 65 remaining with 2 darts in hand. You'll probably end up shooting for bull last dart.
Did see some pro (probably withlock) go T9 first dart for tops and Imo its a good way to go since if you hit single 9 or miss either side you still get under 60. A 12 leaves you on 55, a 14 on 53, a 9 on 58 and you can shoot for a single to leave a double.
Which way do you go?

A T9 is the best option. That gives you D20.
If you miss the 9, you have a 12 and 14 surrounding the 9. Hitting any of those numbers will set you up for a 3 dart out.
Hit a S9...then hit a S18 and D20
Hit a S12..then hit a S15 and D20
Hit a S14...then hit a S13 and D20

The T9 route sound like the sort of shot Wade goes for - if he is on 61 he always goes for T7 to leave tops, T9 on 67 is a similar sort of shot
Personally I go the T17 route

Good post Marshall +1 from me. Under extreme pressure in a must win situation that's the way to go for sure. I can't tell ya how many times I've hit a single 2 or 3 going for 17's.

Nothing wrong with going that way at all. I prefer the T17 as I practice it more and therefore am more comfortable on it than at 9's, but I wouldn't fault anyone for going at 9's

T9 for me as well most of the time. It's unusual in that nearly all players I meet go for T17, but I don't see any real downside on T9.
The advantages of the 17 route are
- you probably throw at T17 more often than T9, so you might be more confident with that.
- you can go the same way with 2 or 3 darts in hand (with 2 darts the 17 is often a must because of the chance on bull).
For me, the safety belt around the T9 outweighs that.
