How do you aim your darts??

getagrip:

Watching the darts players on tv it seems to me that most of them just look at their target and throw. However a few, most notably Taylor seem to aim with the dart itself.

I have usually done it that way myself but lately I tried just looking at the target and throwing. It seems to suit me better that way.

How do you aim when you play, and also how the hell does the arm know where to throw when just looking at the target and not aiming the dart at it?

Never really thought about it before - I just do it lol. I'll have a practise shortly and see how I do it - but I think I just look at the target and ignore the dart.

USMC80:

Ya I ignore the dart, just stare at the target and throw

mc1958:

Yep, I just look at the target and don't aim with the flight. As for how the arm knows what to do - your brain is telling it where to throw and also how hard.

getagrip:

Hmm interesting then, but I'm sure Taylor looks like he is aiming with his dart so I wonder did he practice that way or was it just his natural style?

chalk is cheap:

At the moment, I'm just kind of relaxing my arm into place then rocking it back and forth to see the arc that the dart is traveling on. Then I line up the dart so that my vertical target line falls over the target. This means most of my misses are high/low rather than left/right (although still get quite a bit of that too).

Eventually I'll get the feel for it and not have to be so elaborate with it but it works fairly well for now.

CanadianBacon:

i bring the flight of the dart back to my right eye, but am looking at my target (if its t20 i'm aiming for the center of the bed, same for doubles). i dont pay much attention to the dart, mainly that its in line with my eye line.

getagrip:

watching Gary Anderson last night he brings the darts right below his right eye but seems to be looking at the target rather than aiming with the dart.

Donkey:

I aim like taylor. I hold the dart in front of my right eye in line with what im aiming at and then draw back and keep it pointing straight and just fire!

Saber:

Grip ya not reading the book. Ya look at a spot on the board, a shadow, a hole, a piece of tuff and throw for that. Aiming is not in the picture my friend your eye, hand co-ordination and focus
is .Your brain automatically does the rest and in your case awwww forget it .

Andy:

Just focus on a target relax and throw , Easier said than done but if you focus on the dart and aiming it you will probably miss !!! Your brain knows what to do but its when you think you know better it all goes wrong ! And thats whats even makes the pros miss under pressure , trying too hard !

getagrip:

I have read that Larry, and George I understand what you mean, trouble is my eyesight even with glasses on is not that good! LOL!

I must be eating dud carrots!

Wazza:

How do I aim?
.. I DONT! I look at a little mark in a segment of the board and throw at it.

I have found this tecnique to be (for me anyway) quite effective, I have lousy eye-hand co ordination but I cannot put a dart up to my eye and sight along it to the board like many players do. I found that when I tried that I lost concerntration on the boardas I was concerntrating on the dart itself.

So now when I have the dart in my hand and cant feel it, I look at the area of the segment I want to throw at and the release the dart with my follow through cutting through the center of the board. Works for me.. maybe some should try it.

getagrip:

Sounds good to me Warren, I think I often neglect to feel the dart as it were, but its a hard thing to describe but I noticed the best and smoothest darts I have thrown are the ones where I get the feel of the dart just right. I think the feel is when you get the weight of the dart co-ordinated with your throw.

Bovrilheid:

I don't aim...I just throw the dart where I want it to land....sounds daft I agree.....but like wazza.....just throw at what you want to hit.....don't think about it...just visualise it hitting your target

Saber:

Good stuff Bo

madzkymadz:

My aim is similar to Bovrilheid's

Saber:

Bo's a good player.

the candyman:

very very poorly!!!

getagrip:

sounds like me!

chrisbamb:

I look at what and where I would like the dart to land and then "order" it to land there!!! Doesn't always work, but it does me pretty well.

Lefty544:

I look at the spot on the board that I want to hit and then with the dart tilted so that the point shows in my peripheral I put the point at the spot I'm looking at on the board.

lfcdartsfan:

same as a few of you i suppose i dont really aim just stare at the target and concentrate more on the smoothness of my throw and keeping it nice and straight and following through pointing at the board, if i try and actually aim or line the dart/flight up with the target it really puts me off, plus ive got quite a quick rhythm and any sort of lining up/pre aim thing like you see a lot of people doing puts me off my natural rhythm

getagrip:

Hmmm I'm starting to think you guys may have telekinetic powers but you just dont realise it.

You throw the darts and subconciously your telekinesis takes over and you think its your arm thats done the work, my mind powers are weak so thats why my darts dont go where I want.

So Taylor is the most Psychically gifted of all players.

Thats my theory anyway. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

look at the target and throw. never take my eyes off the target even when the dart takes a swing to the left or right or flies right off the board, or hits the wall / floor(through no fault of mine i might add Guests cannot see images in the messages. Look at the sector I want to throw, close left eye (I can't aim with both eyes open). Dart point is low

I think you have to aim with the dart. The (first) dart, or at least some part of the dart, should be between your eye and the target.
If you are trying to follow with the second and third then the aim is not as important, you are just replicating the throw.

I'm a lot like James Wade only right handed version.
Arm extended to the point i want to release the dart then start the throw.
I'm more of feel thrower so don't really take aim so much if that makes sense.
I like to feel the release point before i throw.
Feeling the weight and balance point of the dart.
