Well as we all know by now these darts incorporate Targets new grip technology: Cortex.
When I first seen the images of these darts they intrigued me and I was very curious to try the grip and see what it felt like.
Upon getting the darts in the flesh I have to agree with Nathan(check his great review here: CX1 23g review ) and say they are a very beautiful dart, the contrasting blue ti coating really sets off the shape of the Cortex grip and gives the darts a rather unique look. The darts come in the new slim box from Target and are fitted with the 2 tone pro grip short stems which matches well with the blue theme and topped off with the Carrera Vision flights in what looks like a smaller standard shape. There are 2 weights available 21 and 23 gram, this is the 21g version and they are 90% tungsten. They retail for £59.99. Check the Target site here for more info: CORTEX CX1
I think the darts are a real looker and you can see in the close shots how unique the Cortex grip is, its a hard thing to describe and is really something you need to try to get an idea if its for you or not. To me it sort of feels very grippy rolling my fingers side to side but not quite as grippy when I run my fingers along the length of the barrel. When I run my finger and thumb lengthwise the closest I can describe is kind of like a gritty groove, lol sorry but that's the best I can think of Guests cannot see images in the messages. I put the CX1 in a grid box to try and show you the gentle curve of the barrels shape, I would not strictly call it a scallop as it is a bit elongated to be called that its kind of like a straight barrel that has a pinched in waist:
Dimensions:
Length:
The 21g version is around 4mm shorter than the 23g and I think that suits be better really:
Width:
The barrel is widest at the front and rear just as the Cortex grip begins and ends:
The 3 barrels were as stated on the certificate 21.3g and just 4 hundredths of a gram difference between lightest and heaviest with 2 barrels been exactly 23.31:
Weight of the full setup as supplied:
Balance:
It was a little awkward to get the dart to settle exactly because of the curve and the grip but with nothing attached they were very slightly in front of centre:
With the supplied setup they balance moved central:
Balance with my medium, short and extra short nylon stems and standard flights:
My grip with these was naturally at the front but it felt very comfortable there:
Darts seemed to land mostly tail up which is normal for me:
Conclusion:
If I'm honest I was really not expecting to get on with these darts, I presupposed that the shape would be too weird for my front grip style and would be too biased for a centre grip style.
I have to say I was very surprised after throwing them. I was expecting the dart to be bobbing up and down or side to side but it had a very steady flight. I really cant say if its the Cortex grip that is influencing the flight of the dart but it does seem to have some affect on the forward motion but I still had to make sure my release was clean or my flesh would linger too long on the grip and skew the direction. I think its a grippy dart when rolling it side to side but it does seem to lessen the grip as you push forward but it seems to sit nice and steady in the fingers which is good Guests cannot see images in the messages. The one thing I actually like best with this barrel is not the looks or the grip but the feeling of comfort the dart has when holding it. The shape of that gentle curve seems to conform to the profile of your fingers nicely and for me it feels like one of the most comfy darts I have thrown.
I think its difficult to discern how much the Cortex grip is enhancing the darts performance, I think the real test would be if I had 2 even straight barrel darts one with the Cortex grip and one without, personally I find the grip very unique and I do actually think it has some effect in the feel of the dart when throwing, at least for me but I am also not sure how much of an effect the curve of the barrel is having too.
The darts seem to fly nice with my front grip but when I tried from the thin centre the balance was even better so although I think the darts can easily suit a front and probably a rear grip too they may work best for centre grippers.
I have a feeling that the slightly longer 23g version may not suit me as much, simply because I often have problems with some darts over 50mm but these are very nice darts to throw and the comfort for me was the main winner.
