should 'legends' be granted byes into Majors
Hi guys

i have seen some great performances from ex world champs and was wondering wether ex champs:

Priestley
Anderson
Lowe
Deller
Bristow
etc

should be granted a bye into one of the majors?

Peraonally i think they deserve it & the fans would love it?

No way... If you don't qualify you shouldn't be there.

Those spots could be filled by a young up and comer that earned the right to be there.

If they want to play... earn the spot.

I think that qualifying for major tournaments is more difficult than ever, as much as I love to see veteran ex world champions they once had to earn their place at the top and that premise has not changed. People want to see the very best players now, if you want to see veteran then go to see veterans.
I have been a lifetime Bristow fan but would hate to see him embarassed by an MVG, Lewis or Taylor in full flow.
Sorry vet's but I have voted no.

Ditto!! Let the younger guys that are doing it in the daily/weekly grind of the PDC or BDO garner those spots.

Maybe they could do like the USGA does with Seniors Golf. Get a Seniors/Legends of the Past Darts League with events and decent prize money.

A legends tour would be a great watch. Keep the format short. There's an audience for this I think

I think of golf when I read this post and part of me says no, you have to earn your way. But...I also think of Tom Watson at the British Open. He came sooooo close Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.Guests cannot see images in the messages. So, on that note, I'll say sure, why not?

I think if you win a major, you should be given an invite back for the next 5 years.

I voted no because I feel it should be they earned. I think a legends tour would definitely be the way to go though to get them back on the stage. It would be a lot of fun to watch

A legends tour was done a few years ago - sponsored by BetFred from memory. There has been talk of it coming back but nothing concrete.

Back to the original question, if they are good enough to get there via the qualifying route (whatever that is set down as) then they deserve it - nobody has a god given right though to be exempt from the qualifying process, especially if the last thing they won was an egg cup 15-20 years ago.

I also agree with Milky to a certain extent about winners getting an invite back - 2 years would be about right with 3 at a push, but 5 years is too long in my opinion.

dont ex champs automatically qualify for grandslam or something?

ok how about theres a tourney for ex champs to qualify. the winner gets a first rounf match.

i think being an ex world winner should count for something.

imagine the drama if a Lowe, Brissy, Priestley or Deller got past round 1 and into a later stage. Itd be a Rocky esque story & i think it'd get a major nostalgia coverage & really capture the imagination.
