So yesterday I'm on 116 and I'm thinking T20-S16-D20. First darts hits S20, so I go T20 which I hit, and D18 which I don't. My opponent, a very experienced and gifted Irishman, wins the leg and then says, "You should have gone 19's." I say "Whaaaaa?" or something to that effect, and he says, "What, yer a little Mutt & Jeff?" (he's Irish, but fond of Cockney slang). "Of carse! Treble 19, Single 19, Double top. All the pros do that."
He then drank the rest of my Guinness by mistake. I said nothing.
Is he correct?
26's so far this year: I've already lost count. :-)

Never seen it that way sounds good as if you drift either side on both 20 or 19 with the first dart you can't finish unless you hit T3,T5 or T7 or doubles lol but 19s would give you a wider option if you miss
Iv done it D20 D20 D18 thought I was guna get hit lol

Either way you need one triple to complete the out shot. Just go with what's comfortable for you. You hit the first 2 darts to have a shot at the D-18 and simply missed it. Same thing could have happened if hitting 4x19 and having the D-20 left. At least your way, you're practically shooting on the same plane as the 20 & 18 are on top of the board.
The only down side I see is if you got low and hit the S-18 on the third shot leaving D-9 if you come back for another shot. I, like many, hate the D-9. At least the progression is a bit better on the D-20 if you miss low.

I guess my mental reaction was, "...okay, I'm sitting on an even number. You're saying go for an odd treble. If I hit it I'm on an odd number. If I hit the single I'm also on an odd number. You're out of your mind." So my brain is momentarily paralyzed as I watch him down my beer.

When there is a single , treble then double finish I think a player would normally be throwing not analyzing but would have had a proper harsh word about someone necking my beer.

Any finish is good if you finish. I hate when people say, "well that's what the pros do". So if the pros go on a killing spree and jump off a bridge that means we all have to do the same? I say do what is more comfortable for you. I would have done the same as you, I would have gone at the 20 first and seen where I was.

NOT all the pros go 19s. I prefer the 20 route as well, as d18 is one of my favorites... Just like RvB.
I don't think I've ever seen Barney go 19s on 116.
If I hit the t20 first, I go 16 tops just as you did.

Like Milky said, not all the pro's go that way. i'd say it's split 50/50. 116 is one of those outs where it really doesn't matter. Double 18 is just as good as tops with 1 dart in hand.
BUT... how you might of got to 116 is what matters most!! Pretend you're left on 181, which is a very common number to be left with. You throw 2 single 20's and stay right on the 20's leaving 121. A mistake! Your last dart should of been at the 25/bull in the hopes of leaving 116. That one dart could be the difference between looking at a bull on your next turn or a normal sized double as it only takes ONE treble from 116 to get you to an outshot.
