DR. DARTS
Great images indeed. Details of the Dogger Bank No. 1. Team can be found on my website at
www.patrickchaplin.com. Just enter Grimsby in the search box and that'll tell you all you need to know, including the legendary (probably mythical) 1,000-segment dartboard supposedly invented by the landlord named Dolan.
Darts saloons were established in London in the late 1930s to build on the enthusiasm for the game by the upper classes. The saloons were set up to ensure that they did not rub shoulders with the 'rif-raf'. The posh folk paid for private tuition, merely standing at the mark and being instructed how to throw. The instructor also retreived the darts as the players were not allowed to do so. Darts in the late 1930s was abit of a fad with the upper classes which ended with the outbreak of war.
The complete history of darts from Day One to the outbreak of World War Two was the subject of my PhD. My book DARTS IN ENGLAND 1900-39 - A SOCIAL HISTORY will be published in paperback for the first time on 1st November. This should help you and all other darts fans to understand the history and development of our great sport.

DR. DARTS
Getagrip - You can purchase DARTS IN ENGLAND 1900-39 via Amazom or via the Manchester University Press 'depot' at
www.nbinternational.com. and yes the price is £15.99 plus p&p. I know that you and other forum members are interested in the actual history of the sport of darts. Well, this book considers all the theories including one that argues that modern darts is partly FRENCH!
I'm really chuffed that the book based on my PhD is now affordable to all darts fans and sincerely hope you (and others) enjoy it.
News about my next book 180! FASCINATING DARTS FACTS can be found at
www.thehistorypress.co.uk. and, of course, in the next issue of DR. DARTS' NEWSLETTER.
