Been reading Bobby Georges book and he considered it the legit world title + it was running for 60 yrs or so.
It seems to be forgotten & barely regarded yet seems hard as hell to win.
Now i know it can be argued that George bigs it up as it was his only real title & as such he wants to be remembered as a world champion however it does seem to be the lineal darts title of sorts.
Wat do u think?

I agree with Bobo it was the legit world title as anyone could enter and have a chance of winning it whereas both BDO and PDC titles aren't open to all

I think even Bristow said - "You ain't won nothing, until you've won the news of the world.

1000's of Players entered each year (Including myself a couple of times back in the day) To come out the winner is a real achievment and should be classed as the Real World Champion.

It was one of the hardest to win, so I wouldn't say it was a lowly rated achievement its just that most fans dont know much about it these days.

George seems to have an issue with it & therefore him not being recognised as a former world champ

Even Phil once said that it was the hardest one to win. A best of 3 legs from 8 feet is NO joke!! If you can win that out of 1000's of people then you've done something. I wish they brought it back.

In terms of shaping the modern game the NotW championship was important. It helped to standardize the game in the 20's using the clock board, although an 8ft oche at the start. Before that local leagues used local rules, Yorkshire Boards, East End boards and 9ft oche's Manchester log end etc.

When I started playing it 'The NOTW' was it and just qualifying must have been quite an achievement when it first started there were 1000 entrants and at its peak there were some 280,000 + hopefuls trying to get through the locals to the regionals' and so on.
My father was competing against Ernie Burrup (1957 semi-finalist) in a local open singles tournament in the same year who was after the hat -trick but lost to my *dad who went on to do the only hat-trick and was given the trophy to keep. It was sponsored by Symonds Brewery (just like another brewer who sponsored the original NOTW) ...obviously they had a vested interest as pubs and darts went hand in hand.
I was quite young but still remember seeing the little shields on the base of the trophy which read E.Burrup 1955/56 then *M.Penn 1957/58/59
Cheers

My father Merlin, once told me that
"You should end up pointing to what you were aiming at when you've released the Dart."

It was considered the pinnacle of darts before the start of the world championship. Even after the start of the WC the top pro's were desperate to win it.
Wasn't Bobby George the only player to win it without dropping a leg? I do think that Bobby is sometimes underrated especially as he won it twice.

They really have to bring it back, obviously it cant be the same name as the Newspaper is no more but there is no reason why the format cant be done again.
