New feature for adding pics
Update Oct 2021:  For technical reasons relating to permissions, users under ~5 posts can't use this method.  The precise count varies with operational need.  Use Guide 9 instead.

A recent upgrade allowed us to implement a new tool for pictures.  For some time, been eyeing a way to add images - automatically resize them - but enlarge when clicked.  @Cateye doing this for while - see this review as an example:

https://www.dartsnutz.net/forum/thread-40452.html

Cateye does this manually, but I've been looking for a way to make the technique available for everyone.  Takes care of the overly large picture issue as well.  I'll use this tool to add pics to this guide so you can see it in use.  I know you'd rather see a darts review - but what the heck. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Just under the Smilies box when you post - you'll see a new icon:

Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Either drag your pic on to that box - or click and follow directions to use your File Manager.  I'll warn you now - if you use a File Manager be sure to click the text "Select File" at the next step.  Haven't worked out how to activate the icon bit, and may just drop that.  Modified the code and probably broke something - lol:

Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Obviously has to be a picture you have - not on the Internet somewhere.  If you can't reach it with your File Manager - this won't work.  Won't work for non-pics either.  For that you'll need to use MyDropZone.

No one is forced to use this, but gives options for those who care about forum performance and things like that.  Or just think it's cool - lol.  I'll leave you with a dart pic: Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Nice and an very user friendly implementation Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I normally resize my picture to a FullHD resolution before uploading them to Imgur so I just tried it with an original (huge) picture
... and by clicking on the picture it loads external in Imgur which should not affect the forum bandwidth.

If the uploaded picture is small enough to be shown as a kind of overlay in the forum site (like your examples above) I believe that this overlay technique will eat the forum bandwidth.
I would appreciate some information regarding the bandwidth with these two scenarios.

But what the hell happens with a large picture if I use the new forum dropbox?
The picture size is reduced to 25%, that's strange.
Do you implement a background resizer in the forum software or is there a Imgur mechanism I don't know?

Here's a manually uploaded picture to Imgur and manually linked: The image stays unchanged at 4000x2250 px in Imgur.
(IT'S WORKING. TEST PIC REMOVED)

The same picture uploaded and linked via the new forum dropbox: The image is reduced to 2000x1125 px in Imgur.

Don't think so.  We do nothing on the Imgur side.  Might be differences between an Imgur account holder and an anonymous upload - which our API is.  Can't really say.  We merely leverage a documented feature of calling for a thumbnail version of the pic from Imgur.  This reduces bandwidth by up to 90% in some cases I've seen.  So you go from a 4000+ px wide image to 640 px wide.  I've seen images over 7296 px posted on here.  Impossible to display unless you use CSS to make it fit - which we do.  Doesn't reduce the actual amount of data to be moved though.  I talk about manually editing Imgur image links to achieve these results in this guide.  A few long time members have reached out to get help in doing exactly that - and I thank them.  They remember the old days.  One thing about the attachment system - you could restrict physical size.  Which effectively controlled display size in the case of pictures.  But then everyone would have to make their pics smaller to upload at all.  Tempting - and could do that - but hard to go back to old ways once the genie is out of the bottle. We're using the 'l' option - so a large thumbnail.  If you click it to get a larger version - passes through a feature called Fancy Zoom to display.  Instead of taking you directly to Imgur, Fancy Zoom uses CSS to format and show the pic in a pop-up window.  We've had it since 2015 or 2016 for image links.  Edit your post to see the difference.  Fancy Zoom only kicks in after you've posted.

Here's the developer tools image output for this page.  Sorted by size - the first 2 images are actually advertisements.  I've been known to edit an ad if the image doesn't meet our specifications - lol.  In this case everything's fine, and you can see the size of the data we're moving.  I manually disabled cache in my dev tools to get a truer picture of how long to load the pics.  A cached image should load faster - and the Forum caches as well as your browser.  At any rate, more factors involved in the time stat than physical size.  Here's the raw data:

Besides, not forcing this on anyone.  But hard to argue many members give no consideration of picture size - therefore data quantity - when they post a pic.  Now they have a tool which will help.  But suspect I'll still be manually editing quite a few posts - until the day I don't. Thanks for the answer.
I only use anonymous uploads on Imgur because I never succeeded to register an account.
Should be easy but I always ended in errors and finally gave up.
So the upload via the API must be different from an upload via the Imgur website and results in a 25% resize. (everytime/sometimes? I don't care enough to figure out the rules)

Fancy Zoom is still confusing for me, I'm pretty sure that I got a real external link to Imgur AFTER i posted and tried it, but now Fancy Zoom kicks in.

Not sure Cateye.  The workings of Imgur and other sites often elude me.  Have enough to worry about right here. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Edit: Just checked the logs - might be possible Fancy Zoom needs to be re-initialized.  Did so 11 hours ago during the upgrade, but strange things sometimes happen with cache.  I can rebuild our cache but can't do much about yours - lol.

Nice dart review. Oh wait this isn't about reviews. LOL

I'll have to try posting some pics using this later. Seems like the resizing is the way to go for most all of us. Thank you Admins

@ cateye those pictures you added above the first one you added manually (the huge file) takes quite a while to load when i click on it (around 12 to 15 seconds (my internet is quite slow normally any way)) the second one, is almost instantly loaded (within a second, or two).

It definately takes more than twice as long to load, with the manual image, both pictures look the same on this pc (opera @ 1024 x 768).

Once its in the browsers memory buffer (cache or what ever it uses) the first picture loads fairly quickly and is almost as fast to load, as the second image, even, if i quit the browser and reopen the image (am guessing the picture is loading from the browsers cache the second time around).

I guess that means the new, feature, is working well, it is loading pictures up relatively quickly, after the resize.

And thanks for the changes.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.
Usual set up :- 23 gram, darts clearance (no name scalloped darts) with a 50 mm barrel, 41 mm nylon shafts + standard flights.

Trying out, red dragon 24g hell fire b, with 41 mm nylon shafts + kite flights (fly well, these).

Other barrels I quite like, are, 24 gram knurled assassins (by harrows).

Various random, other darts, on my rotation, from 20 to 24 grams.

Yes, the first one is the unchanged huge one and takes a while to load, depending on your download speed.
I will remove them from the post , no need for anyone to wait for some test images.

I think they show the differences up quite well, so thanks  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

SUPER FEATURE! Lots of times I don't post especially pix since I have to upload it to my own hosting site, then go through many steps to get it here.

Quick question: if I'm still using my hosting site for whatever reason, and I post a large pix, does that handicap the forum?

Let me give this new feature a try!
