Quoting the first post in a thread
Noticed this happening a few times recently, often by newer members.  Wanted to point out you rarely need to quote the original post (OP) when responding to a thread.  The thread owner will get notification of a new reply - unless they've deliberately turned this off in their alert settings.

Of course there's the odd time which this just makes sense - the thread has strayed or something.  Which certainly happens. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

But I think the quote is often due to members selecting the 'post based' Reply action button - instead of using Quick Reply at the bottom.  The latter is thread based - the former is post based - and will quote the post where you've clicked the button.  If it's the OP, often that poster will get 2 alerts.

Talk about this here:

Just an interesting feature you can use to improve the effectiveness of your posts.  And make it a little easier to find your way around.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Should mention the "New Reply" buttons at the top of bottom of a thread work fine to avoid quoting the OP.  Takes you directly to the main editor instead of quick reply. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.
