2014 Steve Beaton Adonis Grip 22g darts review

These are the new Winmau 2014 Beaton Adonis grip darts. They are 90% tungsten and have the new Adonis grip coating which is kind of a bronze gold colour but feels a bit like gold ti only a little grippier.

The darts come in the usual Winmau plastic packaging and are housed in a hard plastic case with point protector and medium alloy stems and Rhino signature standard shape Beaton flights. The inlay card has a check out chart printed on it which will be handy for some. The darts have a RRP of £30.

As you can see from the pics below they are the same design as the standard Beaton darts from Winmau except for the Adonis grip. The barrels have a number of areas with different grip types, there are a few grooves at the front then a smooth section and then more grooves before it has a micro grip section and then a thin ringed section that tapers towards the shaft. Overall the grip is a medium grip but the Adonis coating itself provides a certain amount of grip on its own.

Barrels are a little shorter than my favoured length of 45 - 48 mm:

Width feels just about right to me though:

Barrels are well matched, just 8 100ths of a gram difference between lightest and heaviest:

Balance with nothing attached was very slightly front weighted, not as much as I was expecting really:

Balance centres up with the supplied setup:

Balance with my own medium, short and extra short stems:

My natural grip was on the smooth signature section but it was afford some decent grip by the Adonis coating:

Conclusion:

These are very nicely made darts that I think are probably best suited to people that like to grip just around where the micro grip section is. Although I felt the Adonis grip was very nice to hold at the smooth part and it seemed to get a little grippier as it warmed, the darts seemed to dip a little too quickly when I threw them. Maybe it just needed a little tweaking with the setup but after doing the video review I did find two ways to counter it, one was to throw just a little harder and the other was to angle the point up a little more so it had a little more air time before coming down straight.

I don't think they suited me overall though which is a shame as I really like the coating on these. One problem I had was my finger that I rest on the knurl of the point seemed to sweat as soon as I touched it and would slip when I was throwing which was a little off putting. I have had this problem with silver points before and its why I prefer the black coated points, it may be that its just a personal thing to me and my skin reacts to the silvery metal?

Holding the darts from the micro grip section was not my natural grip but the darts felt better balanced at that point which is why I think they could suit you if that's around where you like to grip.

They are a lovely dart though and I think if you buy them your going to like the Adonis coating Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I think the shortness may be what affects me now, I used to throw the Lowes and Fordhams well, but my throw was more loopy then than it is now so they just don't fly the same. I think darts around 48mm are best for me but having said that the Buntings are longer but with short stems they are flying nice so must be other factors that contribute to it such as how the barrel is weighted Guests cannot see images in the messages. Another top review mate, +1 on its way

Got mine today, very impressed so far - only bad thing I have found is the points are very slippery, not so much they fall out of the board but will need scuffing before I think about playing a match with them as they dont take any pulling to remove them from the board.

You shouldnt need to scuff new points IMO to feel confident the wont fall out, the Red Dragon ones come with black points, grip the board nice, but it seems new steel points are not holding in modern boards, or maybe just my Target Pro Vision and the pubs Blade 4?

Another thing bugging me, I was going to pop some gold storm points in them, no way they are going to fit so back with the original points for now - out of interest I tried to fit them in one of me silver Beaton sets - no go either - maybe they are one of the barrels too tight for storms?

Anyway, I'll give them a good 8/10 so far, packaging a bit naff, not convinced with the points but the darts themselves are beauty's, the gold rings really look smart on the bronze coating, and a nice touch having the back end natural tungsten. :Saucey:

Great review again. Not my kind of dart though, not sure I like coatings for grip over a cut grip. Especially once those darts start hitting each other that coating is going to come off.

I agree, would always go for a cut in grip over a coating, but it is actually surprising how much grip it gives.
As for wear, if anything like silica it should wear well, and mikes pictures of Beatons match darts look in great condition so here's hoping it lasts up well.

Another good review - these are great darts, especially with the coating, and they fly great with either the oversized pear or kite flights - I love them

I wish I had some oversized pears to try with them, but I don't want to play about with them too much as I will put them in a comp for the New Year so don't want to risk getting them too marked. I think they could have done with a touch more air time with my throw, not sure if the oversized pears would provide that?

Anyone tried repointing these?

Not liking the knurled points so wanted to swap them, tried Red Dragon's black ones, standard silver, Target Diamonds and even Storms - all loose, so loose in fact can push them in and pull out even with cling film over them.

Looks like the knurled points are Unicorn: https://www.puredarts.co.uk/replacement-...oints.html

Anyone any experience with Unicorn points being thicker as it seems Winmau has drilled the barrels wider as everything I tried so far is loose and falls out.

Cheers

I don't think they are Unicorn points, I reckon they are these ones - https://www.reddragondarts.com/cgi-bin/s...pl?act=big&p=2110&secdesc=1&id=dragon

I tried changing some over on a normal set about a month ago and I had a similar problem, so I just put the knurled points back
Reply
Yeah, think you are spot on there Mike, most likely them, just puzzled why other points are not thick enough - and yeah, I done the same, just put the knurled ones back in - gonna try and sand them tomorrow tho as they are irritating for me.

I repointed a set of RD Grizzly's which have points the same as beatons, and the storm points went in them without any effort. So i left my steve beatons alone.

Great review again Grip!
