Fool proof bull height
Lightbulb
Ever been stuck in that situation where a board is hung in a cabinet or over a work bench or kitchen sink and find it difficult to get the right height?
Well in my case it is a small raised garden bed going on to pavers which have a slight amount of "fall" for water runoff (outside board).
No matter how hard I tried this board just always felt different in height as opposed to my other two setups that are on flat ground (yes I used a level and straight edge, and the diagonal measurement does not work on uneven ground), I have one in my shed for cooler months, one tucked in the corner of the garage for hot windy days (its open a bit), and one outside under the patio (out door entertainment area) for calm, and warm pissy days and nights that is my problem board due to the fall in the paving and the small garden bed.
As I am a bit O.C.D. and I like every thing to fall into regulation by at least 0.0001 of a millimeter so Iv got nothing to blame but myself for lack of performance, I used an old bricky's trick to find the correct height for the bull. The bricky will use a length of clear hose filled with water to find the correct level when building piers and such over uneven or unlevel ground.
The method worked a treat and I found that the suspect board was about 25mm out, so I thought I would share it with my fellow O.C.D. Nutz members if they find themselves in this sort of situation.
I have prepared a picture tutorial similar to my "dart board fix" one that has a short vid so you can get the jist of it easier. You will have to excuse the lighting and some of the focus in the vid as I done this myself with my hands full lol, but you will get the general idea.
First up I would like to say that the tape measure stuck to the upright and the food coloring in the water is not needed and is only there for tutorial purposes.
I recently pimped my backboard in such a way that it had to be hung at the correct height in order to get an even boarder around the dartboard, so I had a bull height mark on the backboard and fixed it to the wall (using this method), then it was just a matter of placing the Uholder at that mark and bingo, correct height for the board.

You will need at least five and a half meters of clear hose, tape measure, tape, food coloring (optional),water and lots of beer. You will have to fashion a make shift Profile or brace that is long enough to go above bull height (2m min).
Plus all the equipment that you need to hang a backboard or dartboard.

This garden bed and the fall in the paving was the reason I was having trouble finding the correct height.

The height is found at the throw line so it dosent matter if the walk to the board is up or down hill, it will be as if it is on level ground. To do this you need to fashion some sort of profile like this one, I did use a level to get it plumb.
If your lucky enough to have a friend then the profile (brace) is not needed, just use a tape measure and your pet stooge.

Next put a mark at the correct height on the upright. (the tape measure is not needed anymore, but is there for the tutorial)

Tape the clear hose onto the upright with an open end higher than the bull height and fill with water. The opposite end is visible in the pic (to the left) and is only there to give you a viewpoint of how the system works. (if it dosent look even then thats because of the angel the photo was taken on)

once the correct height is determined fix the backboard in place or for those who use just a surround, fix the Uholder to the wall.

Now check that height again and fix the Uholder too suite.

Now I know this may seem extreme to some people but It is so accurate its silly, and as I said before, Its perfect for those deep cabinets, over work benches and all those other hard to get places.

happy hunting

lol thanx Grip.
The water hose level was something I seen an age ago and only just recently came back to me. The Idea is simple and I seen brickeys just pull them out of there trailer already loaded with water, they just got a bung in each end and is rolled up.
If you had two people you could do away with the profile and just use a tape measure with your mate on the dumb end.

+ one from me as well!! Great idea - I have a thin piece of chain that I use. It can be used to measure from the bull to the ocche, or using the small nuts and bolts that are markers, also has the bull height from the floor and the distance from the ooche to the wall. Not as accurate as your way though Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

WHY!!!!!
Its not imperial so I can understand it lol.

Over here (metric system) we try to get a tape that has no inch measurements on it so you can read both sides without having to transfer the mark across when in the situation you cant get the mark on the mm side.

I've looked at this over and over and it's mind boggling to me. But thanks for sharing the technique. I'll look at it again when I'm not so tired

I totally understand the concept and might try this as verification. I suppose I could get hose like that at the hardware store. I wonder how you fill it? Funnel? Odd size for funnel. Maybe plastic pipettes?
