Long point balance fix
Well I wouldn't call it a fix entirely but more of a happy medium, although for me I haven't noticed any difference in the way the dart fly's when usually I would. now lets explain.

A while ago I wanted to change my tips in a straight barrel dart so I got some of the longest tips I could find and found that for some reason I didnt like the way they were flying but could see the advantages a long tip could offer, so I get an idea, how about I thin the tip out so there isnt all that weight at the front, and they flew better. Now I threw these for well over 6 months and they never bent or became a problem.
I recently changed to a different shaped barrel and it is very thick in the front, 8mm, so I thought that longer tips may make grouping a bit better and put the same long tips (untouched) in but did not like the way they flew, so I thinned those buggers out too and they worked well.
Now I dont know if it is a head thing or the long tips are truly throwing something out, but by thinning them out it is either fixing my head or the balance of the dart.
Anyhow I just put them in a drill and allowed for where my Trident 180 would finish , spun them VERY slowly (griping the chuck on the drill) and laid them on my belt sander taking the meat out of most of the point, periodically dipping them in water as not to heat the steel up cuz if you change the color of the steel you have stuffed the temper up.
here is some pics of my recent set

I didnt lose any length on these tips what so ever, the tridents seem to make them look shorter. and apologies for the photos as the closer I get for the macro the flash dosent light the whole picture.

Nice tip G have a +1.

I can see the advantage of having a long point but for me its how it feels in my hand, I like to rest my fourth finger near or on the point tip and with long points it does not feel right for me.

But your idea is worth a try to those that what to keep a check on the balance.

long points are paying off already!!!
Had to take pic cuz I dont think this would have been a max without the long points, the dart on the bottom would have been in further blocking more of the bed, and you can clearly see how the dart on the top has found the triple bed and kicked itself up as it buried itself in. 99% sure this wouldn't have happened with the short points.
Excuse the dust in the pic, no these darts havent been in there for a week lol, I was doing some sanding in the shed while I was waiting for the camera to recharge lol.

My father Merlin, once told me that "You should end up pointing to what you were aiming at when you've released the Dart."

Great post! I'm wondering, if points are longer, the dart is sticking further out of the board so if you hit it coming in, the deflection will be greater or am i over thinking here?
