Hi
I have yet to treat myself to a Christmas prezzie. I'm looking through some darts that I rather like but I can't really justify them to myself. I have all the main barrel shapes(straight, bomber, etc) and they are all the right grippiness for me, so every dart that I see is really just a slightly different version to one of the darts that I already have.
But people buy new darts all the time.
How do you justify buying new darts for yourself? Maybe they are a new barrel shape that you haven't got, maybe they look nice, or maybe just as a pick-me-up after a difficult week.

Wait, I need a reason to buy new darts? Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.
My main "reason" is:
-I want that dart

In a way I would love to see something and then buy it, but I'm thinking that if I did I would just end up with 4 thousands darts that I don't need. So that's why I need a strategy.

Can't help you with that, as I just love buying and collecting darts. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I like to try different shapes, and over the years more or less every major shape is represented in my little collection. Now that that's happened I am also finding it hard to justify new darts to myself, as I am not the sort of person who will buy "yet another straight barrel dart" to try because I have a set that are right for me.
However, I do like scallops so if a "variation on a front scallop" comes on the market I will have a long, close look at it. However I usually ask myself "am I happy with my current darts?", swiftly followed by "what tangible improvement will these new darts give me over my previous ones?" Most of the time I have no satisfactory answer to those questions.
This is not to say I won't ever buy another set of darts as I have switched recently from the RD Flintlocks to the Carrera C13s because of a more grippy scallop, but those two questions are usually my motivation for buying another set of darts.

The main reason for me when buying new darts, is to have the possibility to play better with them. I have 7 sets now, mostly straight barrels but also others and between 21 and 26 grams.
I'm now just a few days before my next order, which will include my 8th and 9th dart, one being 19 grams. I told myself a few months ago that I gonna buy 10 sets maximum before february ends because I want to stick to one set afterwards for going into my first league season.

With me it's mostly buying them for family members who want to try different darts. My nephew and niece live with us now, the niece has settled on two sets and for the most part I'll only be buying her stems, flights and cases now. The nephew is a huge Lewis fan so I pretty much have to get everything with his name on it. My better half seems determined to own every set of 24g ringed darts she can find, so a lot of money has gone towards that quest, she has more sets than the rest of us combined and can't seem to handle the fact that she throws best with the cheapest set she owns and doesn't throw nearly as well with the one she likes best (she's a huge Nicholson fan and loves his darts but throws so much better with her shorter Datadart Omegas and it drives her nuts).
Over the past year I've only gotten three sets for myself, and two were actually gifts to me. And even then I keep going back to what I like best anyway. So honestly, I don't have a lot of motivation to buy darts for myself at all, I'd rather buy them for the family.

I've only got the three sets listed below. The Harrows Aura were first and I still love them but they aren't quite grippy enough for me. When I saw the Taylor Gen2s I just had to have them. Only being into darts for about a year or so at the time, I didn't realize what an important role my grip and the position of my grip(front/center/rear) would play in what darts were best for me and found out $116.00 later that I can't throw a front weighted, bullet-shaped dart! Frustrated with that, I found the truly awesome forum that is DartsNutz and went to work picking apart threads trying to figure it all out! I went back to the Auras and, I assume because of my diligence in trying to throw the Gen2s, found I was strangly more accurate than ever before! Two days later I hit my first triple bull! But I wanted something grippier and a touch lighter. After looking at dozens upon dozens of sets, I settled on the Capricorns and six days after they arrived, my first 180! All that said, I'm now a 24g, straight barrel guy and there's lots of those kinds of darts out there and I want to try them all! More than that, I've seen quite a few posts on here lately with guys talking about basics like the phase 1s and mighty grips..........what I like to call "just plain, get the job done" darts. Nothing frilly. And those plain looking darts are looking really good to me! So, that's the direction I'm headed. Anyway, sorry for all the blather but everytime I look at them I get excited and a that "kid in the candy store" smile stretches across my goofy face! I guess that's my motivation..............or justification! I can't help it and I love it!

as im getting back into the game after a lay off and i never had any decent darts my current reasons are trying to find the right dart for my throw, ive currently figured out the right length for me, and 23g seems to be the best weight ive thrown from all my previous darts, now i just need to get the right dart for my grip which will maybe require 1 or 2 more purchases perhaps? Once im good on that I'll switch to tinkering with shafts/flights/deflectors/points i would imagine
Darts I have bought in the 4 months since i re-took up the game in order of purchase
1) Random Winmau 39mm front heavy torpedos in 20g with short shafts - didnt like the way they landed in the board and felt too light, also had to modify my grip to throw these
2) Simon Whitlocks in 22g, the length was better at 48mm as was the weight but the specialist scallop shape that i thought would help my grip issues was actually more of a hinderance, they have been sidelined
3) Peter wright Mamba 3's in 22g, again the weight was fine but the length still an issue coming in around 40mm, but a nice dart
4) MVG Demolishers in 23g, at 50mm long by far the best length ive tried, also the best weight much easier for me to throw, the grip placement on the dart however is posing an issue due to the shiny ring in the middle being were my middle finger and thumb place themselves, whilst its a great reference point it offers little grip/control
my next forray will be same length/weight darts but something like gando or lewis, even if the grip styles change during the length of the barrel, so long as there are no shiny bits i think i will be happy
