But even then he cannot switch off from the day job.

‘Jackpot’ Lewis, 31, meets Sweden’s Magnus Caris, 48, in the first round tonight at Alexandra Palace as he chases the biggest prize in the sport for the third time, having been world champion in 2011 and 2012.

But when he gets the time, Lewis does his best to take his mind off the arrows.

He said: “If I am not playing or practising, I like to spend time with the family.

“Hobbies-wise, I like to carp fish. I like to be on the bank when I have some downtime. I am into that.

“If I have a day off, I will go. Even if it is minus-10, I will go out there and fish. I love it.

“I go night fishing but I cannot switch off my competitive instincts. Like with Christmas now, the kids are looking forward to it but I know, in the back of my mind, I have a job to do. We can have a Christmas off.

“The main thing is try not to be snappy with the family over Christmas. You are on edge. You do get a bit anxious and snappy. That is the toughest part. You have to learn control.”

Tonight’s winner will be back on stage on Friday night in the final match before the holiday break, with Lewis once more ready to show his consistency at this championship.

He made the final again last year, losing 7-5 to Gary Anderson in the final, and he said: “My game is coming on really well. I am doing three or four hours a day to make sure I am right for it.

“I am in it to win it. I have the best record out of anybody in the last six years in the tournament. There is no reason why I cannot go up there and win it.

“Ally Pally is a stage I enjoy. There is no tournament which competes with the world championship. It is the biggest one. If you cannot get up for it, then it is pointless playing the game.”

Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen eased into the second round as he dropped just one leg in a 3-0 defeat of Finland’s Kim Viljanen and will now play Spain’s Cristo Reyes.

But as Lewis said: “Michael is not unbeatable. He has been the best player of the year without a shadow.

“When it comes to the worlds, anyone is beatable.

“Look at Michael over the last few years and he has been the best player in the world but he has only won once.

“There is obviously a chink in his armour somewhere. He has to work for the title.. and we will all be gunning for him.”

Meanwhile, Mark Webster booked his place in round two p yesterday and then revealed he is relishing being an underdog.

Webster, the No 25 seed who is a former BDO world champion, beat Joe Murnan 3-0 but the former plumber has yet to tap into his A game.

“This is my 11th world championship now and I have only lost twice in the first round,” said webster

“I am happy to get through because Joe has beaten me the last three times we have played, so I put that to rest.

“I am going to be an underdog every round, based on the seeds getting through, and I relish that and I am looking forward to it.”

Webster will now play either Mensur Suljovic or Ron Meulenkamp in the second round after Christmas.
