Having been collecting darts here and there for about 12 years (Not collected as much as you would think in that time ...... maybe a set a year or two ...) there has been a set of darts that I have always found nearly impossible to find !
These are without a single doubt in my mind the hardest to come by darts I've ever sought, the last complete set I see on ebay a few years ago went for silly money (£100's!!)
I honestly thought I would never get my hands on a set, then thankfully, I managed to pick up this collection (separately, within a short space of time)!
Each Dart/Pen basically breaks down into 5 pieces -
3 X Darts
1 X Cone
1 X End cap
The stems are located within the main barrel of the dart and counter clockwise screw out to form a solid brass stem to place your flight.
One of the sets comes with some modified old feather flights that screwed in and also and old box with a signature on it (Im not 100% but could this be Keith Naylor ??....... either way, I'm 100% that the box has nothing to do with the darts as they don't fit !)
Interestingly, all three sets are very individual, barrel lengths are different, the knurling is different (most details seem to change) which indicates to me that these were all hand turned and not specifically to any instructions !
Sadly I have no idea of date, but from what I remember reading about them, they could be well over 60 or 70 years old.

Yeah its cool!, I know Mark (dartbord) has one of those, I almost got one myself not long ago, a very interesting idea really.
I doubt if the box was the original though, just something that Keith put together I guess.
I would have thought with the style of the dart that its original box would have been slim like a pen case and quite probably had small paper flights.
Very nice item to have though
Stuart180:
Yeah, I think its the engineering side of it that appeals to me the most, the work that went into them (hand turned) is pretty amazing considering their age.
Would love to know more about them (who made them, where did the come from etc)
They are my most prized darts in my whole collection.
getagrip:
Thats the same thing that interests me about them too, I had some Jack Hood darts which were curious like that, no longer have them sadly, wish I had kept them to be honest:

Very Rare Vintage Jack Hood darts 30g by dazdart, on Flickr
Stuart180:
Ah wow, those are lovely darts (and very rare), I guess the manufactures can't be bothered to put the work in any more lol (Im stunned at the price of darts these days ..... £80 a set of pretty basic mass produces darts is mad).
dartbord:
I found a set about a year ago from a friend Steve who had to sell his collection. I asked Patrick Chaplin (Dr Dart) if he had any information but all he could do was point me to the Patent website. I did some searching but so far have not had any luck. They are one of my favorites. You can see mine on my flickr site.

Wow, fantastic collection you have there !
Yep, those are the ones!
Where did you get them if you don't mind me asking ?
From someone in the UK or the States ??
I just assumed that they were made in the UK but of course there's every chance they could have been made over there I guess.
getagrip:
No he got them from the U.K. I am quite sure it is a U.K. product.
dartbord:
It is a UK Patent number I believe. I just have not been able to locate it yet. With yours that is probably the fifth set I have ever seen from pictures. Someone was selling parts of one last year.
Stuart180:
Oh I see, I will do some digging as well, would be interesting to see who come up with them.
I remember seeing a guy in the states have a set on his web page (ages ago), may well have been you (if you ever had your own web page ????)
Then there was a complete set set on Ebay (that was actually listed as 'Victorian').
So It's really pretty rare to find a complete set.
I'm a bit gutted that 2 of mine are incomplete (one with an end cap missing and one with a cone and end cap missing).
Managed to get my complete one from a guy in Wales.

If you know anyone who can turn brass on a lathe you could get the other parts made from copying the completed parts.
Stuart180:
I actually used to work at an Engineering company so could get them made .... I'm just a stickler for authentic parts though.

I know its not quite the same, but would still look as good I guess.
dartbord:
Then you would have a tough time making the new brass look aged to match the other parts.
Decisions , decisions.
Stuart180:
I see that Patrick mentioned this dart in his news letter this month and it will also feature in next months addition.
It's being called - " The Northwood Collapsible Dart"
getagrip:
Yeah seen that too, at least we have a name for it now
Stuart180:
Yep, that's a start !
I've updated my thread title so it should now get onto the google search results if someone happens to search for it, they should see this page.
I contacted Patrick and asked him to link the guy to this thread also, so hopefully he will.
Stuart180:
Just got keiths news letter for this month ........... and nothing about this dart!
shafted:
You mean Patrick's Newsletter Stuart, see it's working, his signing of everything is subliminally taking over our minds, he will conquer the universe
Stuart180:
LOL !
Yes, sorry, Patrick !
getagrip:
Hahaha, I hope Keith has not started a newsletter too!
dartbord:
Maybe it's Keith Patrick
shafted:
Patrick has put a special supplement news letter out this month the dart is in it.

One of these on ebay at the moment.
Pretty stunned at the bidding so far, but then again, these are incredibly rare darts, they just don't make em like this anymore.

mc1958:
That is a lot lol - have added to the watch list as I'm curious how much they will end up at.
shafted:
I know something about the bidding on that, nothing to do with me I hasten to add, and im not at liberty to tell you anymore at the moment Lol . but needless to say that price looks extremely dodgy
dartbord:
I think I caught your drift Neal
getagrip:
a private listing again, I wonder???
Stuart180:
To be fair, last time i see one for sale it went for £196 about 2 years ago, crazy money !
mc1958:
just had a quick look on ebay - these are now at £304 with 5 hours left to go!!
getagrip:
I got a message from the guy selling them, from what he told me it is likely he will be re-listing them, I think its you know who who has been bidding silly amounts, I dont think the seller is the same guy I have complained about in the past.
I bet if you bid £5000 you still wont bid enough!
mc1958:
I think I know who you are talking about - why do ebay keep letting him set up accounts
getagrip:
I was on the phone over a week ago to Ebay and they said they would forward my complaint to Ebay Trust and Safety but still nothing was done. He won 2 items from me and never paid, never answered my messages until I sent him a message to his other Ebay account that I was going to report him, then he sent a message saying he could not pay because his car had broke down. But I told Ebay he was using a false address and they have done nothing as that account is still running.
