How do you power this with the provided USB cable? I've tried several adapters/cables and no need seem you work except batteries...

I cant help you as I don't have one but I'm sure someone else will but have you tried connecting via a laptop or pc too to see if it powers from that?

Same as Getagrip here, but if all those cables work on other devices, then you likely have a bad connection, or need to switch something first. Also, some USB ports are easy to damage if you leave it plugged in, and accidentally move the wire sideways. Same thing has happened to cameras that are thetered.
