Coming around again ... Japanese John Lowe style darts with a difference!
Using a steel point in a soft barrel to play on sisal ...

I remembered back then that my favored darts were bullets and torpedoes, and most of my darts were of that shape. As much as I like the looks of slim straights, I can't throw them well.

Fast forward and many decades later, and because I use converted soft at 15.5 - 16g for sisal, it was fairly impossible to get the John Lowe type darts long for enough for me, thick enough and with a special requirement: good grip that goes all the way to the shaft. The closest was the Andy Fordhams, but that was too slim at the back end with a smooth section after the micro sharks. I never knew how impossible it would be to find a barrel that's 36 - 38mm long, 7.5 - 7.9mm thick, with good grip all the way to the shaft!

Thought I'd never ever see my dream dart but I kept on searching and looking out and ages later ... not sure how long ... probably more than three, six months (?), I think I finally found it! Just arrived today with a few otherdarts, which I think I'll pack away or sell off as the new darts suit me so well.

My very own 'John Lowe' Special with a 16.5g barrel, 7.8mm thickest tapering to 6.2 at the shaft end with a distinct slope to push against! Would have loved the shaft end to be somewhere above 7.2mm, but on the whole, I've been throwing clanging darts straight out of the box without modifications, and have never gotten so many trebles since my shoulder tendinitis and trigger finger (still have it).

They feel and fly so instinctively with a 60/40 balance from different grip points, that even using my ultra small flights (see back of photo), they group and fly fairly straight! The very smallest ring at the back still affords me a good grip and push, albeit, if held  gently. Only thing is, I might have to modify it and take the weight down to 16 or less if I can. For a 16.5g barrel, it sails like a 18 or 19g. The barrels are spot on match weighed at exactly 16.5 on my scales.

I know this dart is not everyone's cup of tea, so if you've gotten this far, thanks for reading.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Cheers!

P.S. Sorry for the poor handphone photo. It kinda screws up the texture of the darts.

Really like the look of these! I am partial to this shape, as well, and have had the same problem you mentioned. I switch out between steel and soft tips, but like a bit thicker barrel. Might have to give these a try myself!

Glad my post helps Ranger.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

BTW, the rear is drilled 17.8mm, and the front 15.9mm. That's more than enough space to fit in 2 x 2g tungsten inserts for a 20.5g barrel that throws like it's 22-23g.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

That's a steel point in those darts. I should have used a silver one instead. I play steel on sisal with these about 80 - 90% of the time. I edited my first post to make it clearer. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

My calipers say 36.05 long ,,,7.25 wide,,,,16.53 grams,,,, and they are still on sale for $15 ,,,,,

And for those wanting to try a cheap set of Lowe/Taylor type darts ,,,at $9.60 I highly recommend these ,,,The Quality is so good you would swear the tugsten content is higher than 80% ,,,,,my calipers say 37.48 long ,,, 7.90 wide,,, and 15.95 grams

FYI,,,The Target Titanium Conversion tips fit both the Unicorn Phase 5 and the Target Academy darts perfectly seemless ,,, the fit on the Survivor KUKRI dart is almost perfect ,, I can feel the tiniest lip ,,but I don't think it would be a problem,,,,,,Guests cannot see images in the messages. Aye OJB, thanks for the heads-up! Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

The P5LP was one of the darts I looked at in the beginning when I needed heavier soft tips, but a tad bit too short. Now that I throw 15-16+g barrels, it's too heavy.

The Kukri looked perfect. I'll checck it out and think about cutting the back grooves deeper.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Absolutely no qualms about buying and using 80% tungsten. My modified Dynasty Bones is 80% which I have been using for months, and I would have used that in a match anytime.

Anyways, I've cut a semi-sorta of Target Appolo grip in my Japanese John Lowe Special, and they are now 16.1g!!!  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I tried them for a few throws. Extremely stable dart TBP. Touch bit too heavy so I sold them. I would buy them again in a heart-beat if I could drill them out a bit. Danged! I need a drill press! And more tools, and a lathe!  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.
