Lorraine Winstanley 2-0 Rachel Brooks
Lorraine Winstanley cruised through to the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the Lakeside, producing a brilliant display to defeat her county teammate Rachel Brooks.
Winstanley made a strong start in the scoring department. She posted four straight tons on her throw, but after missing darts at D20 and D10 respectively, Brooks converted D20 for a clinical 68 checkout to seize an instant break.
Lorraine responded well to this setback, posting two 140’s to set up D20 after just 12 darts. She endured more toils on the double, but with Brooks not in close range, the 6th seed posted D1 at the eighth time of asking to draw level.
Winstanley’s impressive scoring continued into the third leg, as she posted another 140 to leave 74 after 12 darts, and on this occasion she was clinical, completing the finish on D20 for a fine 15-darter.
Winstanley was completely outscoring Brooks, posting her first maximum to gain control of the set. However, Brooks responded strongly and left D20 after 15 darts; converting the finish with her last dart in hand to force a deciding leg in the opening set.
The pair both posted 140’s during the leg, but Lorraine was first to a double and held her nerve; taking out 56 for an 18-dart hold and a one-set lead.
Winstanley’s dominance in the scoring stakes continued early in the second set. Despite wiring D18 for a 97 checkout, the 2012 semi-finalist returned to pin D18 for a precious break of throw.

Brooks, a former World Masters finalist, was desperately struggling for consistency on the scoring, and Winstanley moved to within one leg of the quarter-finals with a clinical two-dart 56 kill on D20.
Lorraine was growing in confidence leg-by-leg and she closed in on victory by posting her second maximum of the contest in the third leg of set two.
Her scoring was extremely consistent, and she clinched her straight-sets victory with a tremendous 13-darter on D20, to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Deta Hedman.
Winstanley averaged 84.28 , the highest of the women’s competition thus far, and her first 9-dart average was a mightily impressive 100. She will be hoping to avenge her 2012 semi-final defeat to Hedman this time around, and on the basis of that performance she will take some stopping.
