Lakeside 2016 : Womens Championship Match Reports - Day 4
[font=sans-serif]Deta Hedman 2-0 Corrine Hammond
Lakeside veteran Deta Hedman defeated Australian debutant Corrine Hammond in straight-sets, to reach the women’s quarter-finals at Frimley Green, for the sixth time in seven appearances. Hedman, who has won 13 ranking titles in 2015, will take on either Lorraine Winstanley or Rachel Brooks in the last eight.

Hammond failed to register a treble in her first 24 darts, but she almost held throw, wiring D16 for a 107 checkout. Hedman exploited this miss, and returned to post D5 for an instant break.  Deta cemented this break in the following leg, posting a tremendous two-dart 82 finish for a commanding 17-dart hold.

However, Hammond continued to battle and reduced the arrears in the set. After missing D8 for a magnificent 136 finish, the Australian returned to hit D8 to preserve her hopes of claiming the first set. The Lakeside debutant then forced a fifth and deciding leg in the set, after hitting D16 to complete a 50 checkout.

The Australian continued to grow in confidence throughout the set, and she was in control of the deciding leg. She missed D20 for a 101 checkout, before Deta wired D14 for a spectacular 148 finish. Nevertheless, the third seed was handed a major reprieve, as Hammond busted 20 by hitting D15, and Hedman returned to convert D7 to steal the set.

Missed doubles also proved costly for Hammond in the opening leg of the second set. The qualifier missed D12 for a 141 checkout, before missing a further three doubles to break Hedman’s throw. The Lakeside veteran capitalised on her opponent’s profligacy, taking out 78 in two-darts to retain control of proceedings.

Corrine posted her first maximum in the second leg, leaving 101 after just 9 darts. She endured further toils on the doubles, but eventually levelled the set with D1. The Australian was outscoring her more decorated opponent, but her doubling vulnerabilities cost her once more in the third leg. Deta missed seven darts for a 2-1 lead, but managed to convert D1 to move one leg away from another Lakeside quarter-final.

Hammond posted her second maximum to secure control of the fourth leg, but she missed four doubles to force a fifth and decisive leg in set two, and she was ruthlessly punished by Hedman, who took out 76 to seal a straight-sets triumph. Nevertheless, this victory wasn’t as comfortable as the score-line may indicate.

Hammond dominated the scoring stakes, but her finishing ultimately cost her. She hit just 3 doubles from 31 attempts, and Hedman’s experience and composure in the crucial junctures of the contest paid dividends. Deta has amassed a staggering 91 ranking titles in her illustrious career, but she is still desperate to win that elusive Lakeside crown. Could 2016 be Deta’s year?

[font=sans-serif]Zoe Jones 2-1 Tina Osborne

Zoe Jones survived a minor scare as she came through a third and deciding set to defeat debutant Tina Osborne on Tuesday evening at the Lakeside. Jones, seventh seed for this year’s tournament, scored prolifically but struggled for consistency on the doubles.

However, Osborne, who tonight became the first ever representative for New Zealand at the Lakeside World Championships, acquitted herself well against the 23-year-old Jones.

Osborne made a confident start to the contest, pinning D20 for a 17-dart hold. However, Jones rallied tremendously in the second leg. She posted her first maximum, and confidently dispatched 80 in two-darts, for a 14-darter.

Both ladies squandered opportunities at double in the third leg, but Jones converted D16 to break throw and seize control of the set. Despite this, Osborne responded with a clinical 66 checkout to force a fifth and decisive leg in the set.

Osborne threw for the first set, but the Kiwi showed fragility in the latter stages, missing five set darts, and the ‘Pink Panther’ capitalised, hitting D8 to snatch the opening set.

Jones had the advantage of throw in the second set as she sought to establish control, but she squandered seven darts at double to hold throw and Osborne capitalised, converting D20 at the second attempt.

The Maori qualifier extended her lead in the second set with a comfortable 17-dart hold, before the debutant capitalised on two missed doubles from the young seed to clinch the second set without reply and level up proceedings.

Osborne had the momentum, but Jones responded impressively to suffering a second-set whitewash. She pinned D18 for a precious break of throw in the opening leg of the deciding set, before delivering a tremendous scoring leg on throw.

Jones left herself poised on 60 after just 12 darts, and although she endured some double-trouble, she eventually nailed D2 to move within a leg of victory. In the following leg, Osborne wired the bullseye for a fine 124 checkout but returned to the oche, requiring 25 to reduce the arrears and prolong the contest.

However, the Kiwi was unable to take out D4, affording Jones an opportunity to seal her progression to round-two. Zoe made no mistake on this occasion, taking out 46 clinically in two darts to set up a quarter-final clash against Fallon Sherrock’s conqueror, Ann-Louise Peters.
