Lakeside 2016 : Womens Championship Match Reports - Day 2
Fallon Sherrock (25.97) 1 - 2 (23.36) Ann-Louise Peters
Number Two seed Fallon Sherrock suffered a shock first-round exit in the women’s section, as she was edged out in a nail-biting sudden-death leg against Ann-Louise Peters.  The Danish ace finished superbly for the majority of the contest, which proved to be the decisive factor, as Sherrock joined Anastasia Dobromyslova in suffering a surprise early-exit.

The first two legs went against throw, before Sherrock, who was a losing finalist in last year’s competition, posted brilliant back-to-back maximums to create a possible 11-darter. Sherrock endured double-trouble, but managed to convert D2 and regain command of the opening set.

Nevertheless, whilst Sherrock was scoring confidently, her profligacy in the latter stages of legs cost her the opening set, as Peters claimed successive legs to open up a 1-0 lead. Yet, Fallon showed great character to bounce back in the second set, however.

Sherrock, who won the Zuiderduin Masters title last month, hit D10 to open her account in the second set, before extending her lead with a fine 84 checkout. She began to grow in confidence, and missed the bull for a spectacular 164 checkout to clinch the set. However, her dominant scoring afforded her further darts at double, and she posted D16 to level up proceedings and force a final set.

The first two legs were shared, before Peters moved to the cusp of victory with a clinical 78 checkout.  Sherrock was under considerable pressure, particularly after Peters posted a timely 140, but she forced a deciding leg, by taking out 56 cleanly, in two darts.

Peters secured the advantage of throwing first in the sudden death-leg, courtesy of winning the bullseye, and this proved absolutely critical. Sherrock left herself on 126 after 15 darts, but she wasn’t even afforded an opportunity for the match, as Peters took out 72 to seal a magnificent victory, which sparked emotional celebrations from the Dane.

Sherrock will be bitterly disappointed with this early exit after enjoying such a tremendous year, although she certainly has youth on her side, and she will have many more chances to lift the iconic Lakeside title.

Trina Gulliver (23.14) 2 - 1 (20.49) Dee Bateman
[b]9-Time World Champion Trina Gulliver survived a major scare as she edged past Dee Bateman in a scrappy first-round tie on Sunday evening. Gulliver won through virtue of a sudden-death leg, and will now face reigning Champion Lisa Ashton in the quarter-finals.

Trina started the contest strongly, breezing to the opening set without reply. She converted 76 for an 18-darter in the opening leg, before posting 48 to extend her lead. She enjoyed her best leg of the encounter in the third leg, pinning D10 for a 17-darter, with Bateman way adrift on 230.

However, Bateman, a former World Masters semi-finalist, responded well in the second set. She edged an extremely scrappy opening leg of, opening her account via D8. She began to grow in confidence from this point onwards, and reeled off the next two legs in 20 and 22 darts respectively, to level up proceedings at one set apiece.

The third and final set was a nerve-jangling affair. The first two legs were shared, before a dramatic third leg ensued. Bateman appeared in cruise control on her throw, but she managed to bust 112 by hitting two T20s, handing Gulliver a lifeline. Nevertheless, Trina couldn’t capitalise, and Bateman pinned D16 with her final dart, to move one leg away from victory.

However, Trina regained her composure and converted a critical D10 to force a dramatic sudden-death leg. The most successful woman in darting history won the bull, and managed to post a timely 140 to take command of the leg, before finally securing victory on D2. Trina was far from her best, but her hopes of winning her tenth Lakeside crown are still alive.
