Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA2HFHQKlaY

This is a review of the Unicorn Maestro Premier 21g Terry Jenkins darts in natural tungsten. There is also a 23 and 25 gram version and they are 90% tungsten. They retail around £30. You can find more info here: Terry Jenkins darts

CONTENTS AND PACKAGING:

The darts come in a cardboard box and inside is a nice luxury midi case that has a fair bit of storage space for flights and stems. The darts are fitted with medium alloy stems and signature Terry Jenkins flights.

As you can see the barrels are smooth with a very nice taper on the nose which has quite a smooth transition from barrel to point. Although there is no machined grip I think a lot will depend on your personal tactility of your own fingers. Although it sounds contradictory the darts felt kind of grippy for me and although I cant score the physical grip as such it was still a good medium level of grip overall, more on this later Guests cannot see images in the messages. DIMENSIONS:

Length:

Width:

The darts are widest near the front but they actually taper to the end very subtly.

WEIGHT:

The barrels were close in match just five hundredths of a gram difference between lightest and heaviest:

BALANCE:

With nothing attached the barrel was slightly front of centre:

With the supplied set up it moved a touch past centre:

Balance with my own medium, short and extra short nylon stems and standard flights:

MY GRIP WITH THESE DARTS:

I gripped close to the nose with these, it was on the widest part of the barrel and felt most comfortable for me there:

Darts landed slightly tail up in the board, but a little flatter than my usual:

CONCLUSION:

I have always liked the look of Terry Jenkins darts, they just seem to have a no nonsense style that seemed very practical in ways too. I think its the smooth barrels that make them seem like that, as they should be great for grouping and passing over the flights without too many issues with deflections or catching the flights edges etc

That smooth barrel is also a kind of contradiction in terms of grip as I believe a lot depends on the type of skin, fingerprints, oils/sweat etc that is personal to you. I thin it is something you can only try to see if it works but its like a smooth Formula 1 racing tyre, it grips the tarmac well but would be hopeless in wet mud for example. So I think if your have exceptionally dry or sweaty fingers the darts may seem slippy but if your kind of in between then you may find they grip well.

For me the grip was fine and I had no problems, it was nice to throw a smooth dart actually as they release very cleanly and smoothly from the fingers.

I was surprised to find the darts were very slightly tapered though, I thought they looked straight but its a very subtle taper.

They flew quite well too I cant say I noticed anything majorly wrong in the flight just a very slight fishtailing at first but seemed to disappear as I had more throws. I tried throwing from the centre and rear but was not so good for me, they definitely worked best with my front grip but could still suit a centre gripper and possibly a rear grip if you like a slightly front weighted dart.

Overall they are a nice dart to throw and its a bit weird to say but I like the smooth grip in a way, it made a nice change and was good to try Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Summary Ratings:

Looks: 7 (kind of plain but also a nice understated look)
Grip: 1 for physical grip as its smooth but a 7 for me personally(on a 1 to 10 Scale, 10 been severe grip)
Weight match: 8 (close)
Quality: 8 (nothing to complain about)
Value: 7.5 (good)
Suitability for me: 7.5 (A few things I like about these and they flew quite well)

Great review Darren, I like these darts. I would like a set of the 19g they used to have- kicking myself I didn't get a set when they were on clearance. If you know of anyone that has any let me know

Another top review with stunning pictures

I always thought smooth darts would be rubbish for me but I tried some Datadart Orion, which are very similar to these, and I really liked them

As mentioned a great review with fantastic pictures.

For me I can imagine the wall getting a pounding from these before my hands got warmed up! You would get a clean release though.
A type of dart that is on my must try list.
Currently throwing 20g Wades badly at an Eclipse Pro

Great review, but the Ali stems they send with these things are butt ugly. I got some Wades today and thought the same thing..... why do they send these stems, they are nasty things (in the interview they did with Devon Peterson he mentioned that they warp/bend easily). In this picture from the review, the middle stem looks bent too:

Cheers JC, lol yeah I know sometimes if its cold my fingers feel very dry but once they are warmed up they feel at the right level, I think if my hands were cold then they would be a little slippy Guests cannot see images in the messages. Cheers Danny and I was waiting for someone to mention that pic lol I spotted that too but I am not sure if its an optical illusion as I checked the stems after seeing that pic but could not really see anything wrong?

I totally agree with you on that. i think it has to do with retail. the Maestro range is more expensive than the contender range. but the Maestro range comes with a nicer wallet and Ali rather than Nylon stems. from an average consumer point of view, you are getting more for the extra money. If they came with the same plastic case and cheaper nylon stems as the contender range, many "normal" customers would wonder why its worth paying extra.

I've seen it before with Unicorn stems, I had it with some Phase 5 Sliksticks which Unicorn kindly exchanged!

I've drawn a line parallel with the barrel up to the end of the shaft and to me it looks like the stem is warped:

Another excellent review Darren - I picked a set of these in 19 gram when they were going cheap on DC a while back - I was surprised how well I could throw with them given they were a lot lighter than I normally throw, a smooth barrel, and a different shape - they grip well in the hand and leave plenty of space in the treble 20 when grouping - I can recommend these to anyone who hasn't tried a smooth barrel before.

I think I was more surprised to find they were tapered, I always assumed they were even width straight barrels Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I've got these in 23g and I love them, but I love smooth darts period. Always got on better with them than gripped darts.

Great review Darren, glad to find they are slightly tapered as when I had them I thought that but had nothing to measure them
