Hi people, hope your doing OK.
I started off on standards, and still occasionally use them. I then moved onto kites, and they seemed to work best for me, as pears would land all wonky due to me not throwing correctly.
I was put off of pears due to this, until trying some earlier today. The darts land at the right angle, and actually group the closest I have ever managed. I've gone from a flight that didn't work at first to one that seems to work the best now.
Has anyone else noticed this effect, a flight or stem not working as a beginner, but once you have the basics down and are improving, they work better than your normal set up?
Started playing darts: Mid February 2015.
Darts used: Not having played for a long while, I am leaning towards my phase 5's.
I have just recently started to play again after a long hiatus.

simple answer no much:p Look at a lot of the pros. Gando, Adrian Lewis, Chizzy, MVG. Each one of them use a standard that is larger than most target or unicorn standards.
If you are throwing a really light dart, a smaller flight might be a good add, but i enjoy the extra stability the larger flights give and if the top pros use them, they can't be too bad for your game Guests cannot see images in the messages. So you can spot a good player by the size of their flights?

True no debate there.
But you've said in the past that his fat bombers wouldn't be advantageous to 90% of the current players, could it not be the same with smaller flights?

As I've said before, Phil Taylor doesn't count in any sort of darting discussion. He's too good lol.
Standard flights are called standard for a reason. It's the standard in darts. They must work if so many players use them. Can't fault them.

For me the answer is Yes. Since I've switched from Target Vision Standards down to using Slims and Sigma Pro, my Darts have improved immeasurably... Reduction in Flight size also coincided with a reduction in Lighter Barrels. For me.

Yes ,,,No,,, Maybe,,,, I have a simple grip that I use the same way on every set of darts,, be it 32mm-54mm long,,,and since I moved up to 18gm soft tip darts standard flights are what I use,,,the mini vortex and fantails just will not work for anything heavier than 14 grams total,,,,,,Using large standard flights use to bug the hell out of me ,,, these days they seem to work pretty good for me,,,

Started with Standards but they land too tail up for me, all my darts are now kite, super kite, or pear along with Sigma flights. Small works so much better for me, I can hit 26, 41, 45 with impunity.
You don't mess with The Voice of Reason. You have the right to be wrong.

On my steel darts---Standard. Period. I’ve tried everything else under the sun and it was all just so much whizzing in the wind. Now I just stick with standard and adjust shaft length---it’s a lot easier and simpler.

Holy cow! This thread is right on. I have found, as I progress, i keep reaching for smaller flights. Especially my front loaded lighter darts. With 17 sets of darts, I have 3 with standard flights. All others are smaller. I remember when I got the 24G Winmau Mervin Kings. They landed all droopy. With slick silver points they just kept falling out of the board. I had to scuff the points, until they got replaced with smooth storms. Now the stock set-up lands flight up. Only my throw has changed. I think this is progress. I offer the complaints of my bull being thrashed as evidence. Rock the rocket dart. No lobbers for me.

I'm the opposite.
I started off using slims...then moved onto "Shape" (smaller standards by L Style) now I play with full size standards for the past year+ I'm also playing better than ever.
I lob my darts and skinny flights make me feel like I'm throwing a nail at the board...it's just too direct with no wind resistance. Never been a fan. The whole "big flights don't give me enough room/too many deflections" argument doesn't really hold water...some of the biggest power scorers in pro darts use full size standards.

On a straight barrel then i would say that standards and short/medium stems are the best. But on a lowe shaped dart i prefer to use DXM/ Edge
