Unicorn Contender Kyle Anderson 23g darts review

video link = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bLe8hHIohw

Had these darts a while and as with a lot of darts I am behind on my reviews with my Dad passing away recently so got a lot to catch up.

Was itching to give these darts a go though. When I first seen them I thought they reminded me a little of the old Unicorn Peter Manley darts in the shape but they have a more aggressive grip. Also they are in one of my favourite coatings Golden Ti which I like Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

The darts are 90% tungsten and 23g in weight and retail for £39.

You can find more info on the Unicorn site here: Kyle Anderson darts

BOX AND CONTENTS:

The darts come in plastic clamshell style packaging and inside you have the 3 barrels fitted with a set of black medium Gripper 3 shafts, Kyle Anderson signature flights, 8 flight protectors and a compact case.

The darts have two main section of grip that are slightly different to each other. On the front the rings are more of a traditional style but with deep and wide grooves in between and on the rear of the barrel its a very thin almost knife edge style grip but again with widely spaced and deep grooves in between. Overall the grip is a high level.

WEIGHT:

Two barrels were an exact match and the third was just four hundredths of a gram lighter, so a good match.

BALANCE:

With nothing attached the barrel was towards the front:

With the supplied set up the balance shifted a little more to the rear just past the centre:

Balance with my own medium, short and extra short nylon stems and standard flights:

MY GRIP WITH THESE DARTS:

Gripping at the rear part f the barrel was quite comfy but they suited my natural front grip well Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

The darts landed mostly in an a upward angle for me, mainly as they dropped down from my slightly loopy throw:

CONCLUSION:

I found these darts very nice to throw, at first I was a little worried the grip may be too aggressive but it was fine. Holding the front grip was nicely weighted for my throw and they flew very stable for me. I think the rear grip is that little bit edgier and has more bite but if your a rear gripper and you like a good grip they will be great.

I did throw a few from the rear and as usual its not my natural grip but they still felt comfy and well balanced there so should be fine for most grip types, although centre grippers may fall on the smooth section and if you need plenty of grip that's not so good.

I do like the gold ti coating as it is one of my favourites, although I cant feel the affect of it as much with the thin rings here as I have on other darts with less edgy grip but its still a nice coating to have and makes the barrels look good which is always nice too Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

If you like a slightly front biased dart and need some grip then these are a very nice dart to throw, seemed to suit my slightly loopyish throw well and worked quite well for me. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

SUMMARY RATINGS:

Looks: 8 (nice gold darts)
Grip: 8 (on a 1 to 10 Scale, 10 been severe grip)
Weight match: 8.5 (close)
Quality: 8 (great)
Value: 7
Suitability for me: 8 (flew quite well with my front grip)

Best Feature: Very good grip Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

I am a fan of gold ti too. Just too bad they don't do it for the darts i like! Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

been waiting on a review of kyle anderson's darts.
As always, your review is superb!

I would prefer they put ring grips on the smooth part. The smooth part is the only reason I still haven't bought a set yet.

As always, excellent review with stunningly detailed photos.

I have a problem with the gripper 3 shafts. The mediums are slightly shorter and lighter than medium pro grips. I sometimes throw Devon Peterson Unicorn Contenders. So when I finally got sick of my flights popping off every time the dart hit the board, and I switched to medium pro grips, the balance was off. Hard to believe such a small weight difference could make much of a difference, but it does. And it seems like I was constantly breaking the tangs on the grippers. I love the look of them, but I have pulled my last straw. Gripper 3s are banned from my darts. I think if I showed a pic of the current set up on my 3 fav sets, (short spin top aluminum and vortex flights) it would be like attending a stoning thrown in my honor with me as the stoning subject. But I don't care. I am what I yam, and my reading eyesight is too bad to be monkeying around with flight mutilating punches and fiddling bits, like taking a whiz, caps. i wonder why the packaging is the same design as his flights, yet they give plain black signature flights with the darts? to my knowledge you can only buy the multi coloured design flights so i wonder why they have bothered to print sets of black sig flights just to go with the full set.

Great review. It's weird i see SO many sets of darts where 2 of them weigh the same exact. Than there's the oddball. This happened to my last 2 sets of darts. Weird

Cheers! I have been looking more closely at some of the stems I have used in recent weeks I think some flights are more prone to coming off in certain stems, I think there is so many variations and I think everything is not as standard as I particularly would like. But some times the lengths are a little different from one make to another and some times the slots are a little too short which I think increases the chance of the flight popping off and although it may sound contradictory I think sometimes the slots are too tight, I think when the flight goes on it opens the top of the stem too much which is not so good. I think I have a simple solution to the problem but I don't think it would be implemented by the makers, going to keep it quiet and suggest it to them and see what they think Guests cannot see images in the messages. Yeah I was hoping the flights would be the same as the design on the box, I like those special flights of his too, its a cool design Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Yeah I notice that a lot, I wonder if when the darts are put together at the factory they have some worker who picks 2 the same then they cant be bothered to find another to match so they just stick the nearest one in?

Nice review, they are cracking darts, I put a set of slightly longer black points in mine and the flew lovely.
I often wonder why companies don't put the signature flight that their player uses in with their signature dart, I mean it wouldn't be possible with every player but where it is possible it would make sense to me.

I think maybe they sort them that way on purpose. The difference is so minimal with the third dart anyway. I imagine they have the barrels weighed and presorted. Picking two that are tight and a third that is close is probably a good quality control strategy. If they matched three tight, they might have a more odd assortment left over to match for the remaining sets?
