Darts with that smooth part in the middle !!
I have never been a fan of that as that's where I place my thumb and I like a level 4-5 grip. Yet I see a lot of these darts. Does that make the dart less gripper for those who hold the dart there? Or is it a frame of reference which is good but the trade off? What say you about this.?

My new darts have a smooth part and I use that as a reference point. My index finger rests on the smooth part and I can start to feel the rings towards the front of the dart. For me, a smooth dart or section has provided more grip then any knurl, Dimplex, or any other type of aggressive grip.

I'd rather have a smooth section at the front of a dart like the One80 Dragons because I grip at the rear. Bristows are a nice dart but the grip is all wrong for me with the smooth section at the rear.

I don't grip in the middle... So it helps having 'indexing locations' for my grip.

I remember an old thread we talked about this Larry, think it may have been about my Jocky Wilson's I had recently received back then.
I was with you and thought it annoyed me but now I like it. I use those sections as red. Points and like Cy says, find it grippy.

it used to annoy me too and i would go always avoid darts with smooth sections in the middle or towards the rear. now though i have learned to use them as a reference point and i like it now.

If you are a front gripper like me then a mid section with a different grip, wether it be smooth or a different finish or a different grip pattern or whatever, is helpful as a reference point for the first finger. I always prefer darts with this style.

I find it useful as a reference point, but so long as my actual grip does not fall on the smooth section

I'm using the Bristows and I have a rear grip. For the first 3-4 weeks I've been gripping them right in front of the smooth section, but, as of this week, I've moved my grip to where it should have been all along - right on the smooth section. It doesn't seems to be a problem for me. But my guess is that it all comes down to personal taste.

I both love it and hate it, I've been playing with Ton Machines recently and my thumb sits directly on the smooth part. Like it because of the finger placement, but the minute I have a slip I hate it!

Recently got some Barney phase 5 from Titan in a swap and it's the same again, I use the smooth silver band near the front to hold the dart. Although that is smaller and I do get grip from the gold part of the dart.

Actually looking at a set of Barney phase one due to the fact that the micro grip in the centre part

Why not try "Wizard Grip" then you can have the reference point and all the grip you want

Barney phase 1's WCs is one of my favorite darts of all time, highly recommended Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Dagnabbit, was trying to hold off ordering any more darts, they're calling to me though. Order placed.

I'm leaning towards needing a smooth section in the middle to grip on..I have a finger at the front , finger at the rear , and thumb in the middle ... Smooth area in the middle let's me know it's in the same spot each time.

Using Adam Paxtons or DOC dual grip , my thumb is half on smooth half in the grip at the rear

recently got some ultra core 2s.... Thumb sits right in the smooth section , but prefer the grip on Paxtons. ....

I see another custom made dart on the horizon
