what you mean, they are obsolete in 3 years or are failing in 3 years? My old pc what I built myself is still going strong after nearly 10 years, only thing I replaced was a Power supply a few weeks back.
Maybe they are not lasting so well because they are creating more heat?

I work with computers every day at work and hard drives and power supplies are the most common parts that die. Fortunately I am getting more than 2-3 years out of them.
But I have noticed that the newer equipment doesnt last as long as the good old stuff.

on my new pc the hard drive is 2TB but in my old pc I have the same amount of space in about 4 hard drives, I know one of the hard drives has a bad sector which sometimes causes an error but I think one of the most important parts that is often overlooked is the power supply.
A lot of the PC's are supplied with poor Power Supply Units (PSU's), a good quality PSU is needed to protect against spikes and provide the right voltages across all the rails.

Have to agree the old stuff IMO better quality. Most cases they charge so much easier to buy a new computer for 400.00

Reinstalled browser ect. ect - I use firefox - even tried IP ( worthless). So have uninstalled all the programs I could and still keep this thing running. Can work for an hr or so then bingo - freeze up.

sounds to me like either a ram (memory) problem or an iffy hard drive

old hard drives were only guaranteed for 2-3 years, but that didn't mean they wouldn't last for 10 years, and then they started guaranteeing them for 5 years. You can still get those. However, I think to cut back on cost stock hard drives are still only guaranteed for 2-3 years. You can get a hard drive for so cheap now it's worth it to get an extra, keep backups of your data and if your hard drive craps out after 2 years buy a new one. No big deal. I've had my newest laptop for 2 or 3 years now and it is still going strong.
Laptops are known to have shorter life spans because of the different technology and heat issues

If it runs for an hour or so and then locks up it sounds to me more like a heat issue and most likely a heat issue with your graphics card. Desktop or laptop? If you can open the case get a can of electronic safe compressed air and blow the dust out of it. If it's a laptop you can still open it but if you are not comfortable doing that just spray the compressed air through the vent ports. You would be surprised how much extra heat a little bit of dust can add
