Michael Van Gerwen gold 21g darts review

Video link = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOGTAAEdM7k

Had a few people asking me to review some MVG darts so I got these off ebay recently, as you can see they are the Masterdarts branded version. They cost me £24.99 which is £50 cheaper than the set I had a few years ago which you could only buy from Holland and before he had won any major titles, as you can see on the pic on the box this is even before he won his first world Guests cannot see images in the messages. The darts are supplied in a clam shell style packaging with a plastic case, point protector, medium nylon stems and MVG signature flights.

The darts are gold ti coated and do look nice I must say Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

The darts have a series of thin and slightly wider rings with quite deep grooves, the grip is not aggressive but probably a high medium bordering on to a high level grip.

Detailed Dimensions:

WEIGHT:

Hmmm, this was a very poor match as you can see below, all 3 barrels quite different and the difference between lightest and heaviest was 7.9 tenths of a gram, nearly a whole gram different!

BALANCE:

With nothing attached the balance was just front of centre:

The balance moved a touch past centre with supplied setup:

Balance with my own medium, short and extra short stems and 100 micron standard flights:

I was gripping the darts on the front rings:

Darts landed at an upwards angle in the board for me:

CONCLUSION:

Apart from the poor matching of the weigh I think these are nice looking darts with the gold coating, it makes them an attractive looking set and adds a little to the grip too.

They seem to be a nice dart to throw and the grip works well for placement unless your unlucky to be on the smooth sections. I think its got a nice level of grip too, I can feel the edges of the rings and its was secure without been too grippy.

The darts should be ok for most styles and they seemed to be ok with my front grip but I think I may prefer a slightly weightier model.

They were a well behaved dart through the air and seemed stable enough but tended to be a bit flat flying but not so much that they did not work against my slightly loopy throw.

I cant remember how I got on with the last MVG's I had, to be honest I don't remember throwing them really, but these a nicer than I was expecting and think I could grow to like these after playing more with them. SUMMARY RATINGS:

Looks: 8 (Gold looks nice)
Grip: 7.5 (on a 1 to 10 Scale, 10 been severe grip)
Weight match: 4.5 (quite poor)
Quality: 7 (marked down because of above but only that reason, otherwise quite good)
Value: 8 (decent price)
Suitability for me: 7 (better than expected)

I've got 7 sets of these in 23g and i have no plans of getting rid of them Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images. Glad i got them while i still could as the 23g are sold out most everywhere Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Great review grip, big +1 from me.

I've noticed that out of the 7 sets i have they are all fairly match weighted but the weights range everywhere from 23.6g to 22.8g per set. Also the amount of how far they are drilled out in the back vary with each set but the dimensions are the same. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Thought i'd add that the gold coating on these holds up much better than the likes of the unicorn gold coating.

7 sets, your an addict!!!

Cheers Nathan, I think I probably got a set that was just badly matched at the source, I am sure it must happen a lot may be the billets are not as uniform as they should be so when they darts are machined they don't always match like they should, I don't know really as I don't know how the process works?

Great review. Odd about the unmatched weights. After working with tungsten putty and realizing that .50g really isn't that big in the grand scheme of things, it wouldn't bother me as much as it used to.

I guarantee if you got MVG's beat up personal darts on a scale, they wouldn't be close.

That's true, although I do think they should get close to the stated weight on all 3 barrels, if anything it would prove that some care was taken in making sure the product was right but how many people can detect a half or a full gram difference, I am not sure I could by holding it?

I just love the look of these darts !
I have two sets of 23g regular tungsten , and wish I had a set in gold.
I envy you Nathan !!!!! ( how's that broken point project doing ? )

Would definitely drive the value down of my stock :p But kinda hope they do Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Point is dissolved about 3 mm in and gold coating looks to be unaffected. I have now switched to vinegar for the rest of the way. I hated dealing with glacial acetic acid so will just leave it in vinegar over the xmas break.

Ayup Darren

Excellent photos, darts are let down by weight matching.
