I like to grip my dart about 3/4 of the way back. Bottelsen Precision Grips have an indentation right where I like to grip, so I bought them. What I find, though, is that I'm holding the dart behind the center of gravity, and from what I've read you want to grip at the center of gravity. Is that true? How can I compensate, buy heavy shafts (which seem like they are hard to find, or are really expensive metal shafts like the Cosmos Duralumin)? Buy back weighted darts (seem VERY rare, could only find one set online)? Or should I buy new barrels and change my grip? I use champagne flights, anyone try L Style's Back Balance champagne rings? Just doesn't seem like there's a lot of options for rear-gripping soft tip players.

If your darts are good and your throwing good your thinking tooooooo much.
I know Lowe has mentioned the whole center of gravity deal but I don't think it's all that important. If you look at lot of the top pros, very few of them hold the dart dead center. MVG and Michael Smith both both hold the barrel near the stem/rear...and then you have players like Barney that grip the dart near the nose.
You also have to remember the whole center of balance issue goes out the window if you use a multi-finger grip with a thumb/finger in the back and another 1/2 fingers near the barrel tip/point.
pick them up, throw them, and just concentrate on where you are aiming. once you mess with your grip you can be on a slippery slope to big trouble with your action.
Regulatori is spot on, look at how many different grips there are in the pro ranks. the best grip for you is your grip. and with practice you will be able to throw pretty much any dart well using your grip.
Personally, I can throw any type of dart from a rear grip, I think because of the way I push the dart. I cannot throw from a front grip, especially if its not a front weighted dart, because the way I throw the back wants to swing up over the front.
But I think most importantly, once the dart is in the air it isnt "balancing" on anything. If you can grip the dart and throw comfortably, then i think thats pretty much what matters.

Great advice everyone, thanks. As far as me overthinking...yep, I'm definitely guilty. But I'm a scientist, and being (overly) analytical is what I do! I would also say that I push my darts. The main issue is that I sometimes throw an errant dart because I feel the front of the dart slipping downward as I'm throwing. I thought adding a little weight to the back might help minimize that.
