View Source is your Friend!
Source mode gives you an uncluttered way to edit content before you post.

The main editor is 'WYSIWYG' - meaning it tries to show you how the post will look as you go.  Including all the pictures, fancy lines, and other stuff.  This can make it tricky to navigate.  With source mode, you can also copy / paste text directly from another location.  Important when copying from MS Word or another web site for example.  We talk about this in the Problems with External Editors guide.  In fact, I recommend you do all copy/paste operations using Source Mode.  Just a lot easier and foolproof. For most posts - especially those with pictures - View Source is very useful.  How to get there?  Just click this button:

With our new drag 'n' drop picture system, this is especially handy.  Since we're not limiting picture size, images can be very large.  Depends on your camera/phone settings.  But there's good news.

You can easily resize Imgur pictures 'on the fly' with View Source by editing the image link.  See this guide for a complete discussion:

Short version of what you need to know  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images. :
  1. The original image must be at least as large as what you're trying to resize to, or it won't work.
  2. For the majority of pics, the "l" or "h" options will work just fine.
  3. Place just before the period and extension letters (usually 'jpg') of your picture filename.  See illustration above.
  4. Put your post in source mode to see and edit the links!
That's it!

Using the 'Reply' button at the bottom of posts is the same as quote.  Only difference with quote - I can select multiple posts.  I'll mouse over the 'Reply' control to illustrate:

If you use this method, it's exactly the same as selecting the post to quote using the adjacent button.  EXCEPT using 'Quote', you must go to 'Quick Reply' and select 'Quote these posts now'.  'Reply' takes you directly to the main editor.  As mentioned in the OP, Quick Reply is 'Source' mode by default, the main editor is WYSIWYG.

Here we've selected the post with the 'Quote' button.  Note the red under the Quote button, and the Quick Reply prompt appears:

Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

But using 'Reply' is fine - it's just easier to get your bearings with the WYSIWYG stuff turned off.  Clicking 'View Source' will do that!  Then all you need do is go to the very bottom and find the "[/quote]" instruction - which stands for 'end quote'.  Start a new line and start typing.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. So another powerful use for 'View Source'.  Takes the clutter out of those quotes and replies!

With a little practice, you'll be posting like a pro!

cheers...

Welcome to the wonderful world of View Source.  The Swiss Army Knife of post editing.   As useful on a Forum as reveal codes in Word Perfect 5.1.  If you remember that far back - lol.

Edit: Moved quote out of the DC thread.  Didn't want to hijack anymore than I already have.  But @bk123456's epiphany is important.  And the subject of this thread.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

What we call 'nested' quotes are tricky.  Best way is the Quote action button.  This will cause the Quick Reply box to appear, and the prompt "Quote these posts now or deselect".  Like this:

While in Quick Reply (which is source mode by default) - you edit out the stuff you don't want.  Keeping the matching quote and endquote codes for each member you want to quote intact.  Like I did for this quote.  Just wanted to quote you, so removed all the other stuff.  Test by "preview post".  If it's all wonky - bail out by navigating away. Takes a while to learn this stuff - and much simpler in source mode.  I try to cover the topic in this guide.  But it's a complex subject.  Might be better off using the 'New Reply' button and not get entangled until you figure it out - lol.

Been thinking about reducing the limit for quote "nesting" which is currently 5.  Can be quite confusing - not in Kansas anymore! Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

Thought I'd move the previous post and quote, which probably belongs more in this thread than where it came from. Guests cannot see images in the messages. Please register at the forum by clicking here to see images.

This guide is worth a bump.  Lots of members are posting huge pics - guess that's the way their phones or cameras are setup.  Some members with slower connections will experience a noticeable delay - just the way the 'Net works.  Yes, we resize images to fit better with software tricks - but don't change the physical file in any way.

You can use View Source and edit the image URL as explained above or here.  Or use this super easy guide

The latter Guide is dead simple and takes care of the problem.  No one will experience a slowdown - unless they click to enlarge a pic.  But that's their choice - not something that just happens by looking at a page.  Guests cannot see images in the messages. Final bump before I figure out something to force the issue - lol.
