Phil Taylor & The 2008 PDC World Championship
I've always had a question about Taylor during this iteration of the PDC Worlds, where no one averaged over 100 and Kirk Shepherd made his legendary run to the final.

The commentators kept stating about Taylor looking vulnerable in this time, especially in his match against Wayne Mardle where he took a heavy lost on the deciding set. Even said he was lucky he made it out against a young MvG in day 2 of the tournament.

What was happening during that time that made Phil not the powerful force he was at that time?

Phil had a tough year in 2007, only winning 2 tv tournaments and being less consistent. this probably down to him using his iconic phase 2 darts for 8 years! Phil is known for changing a lot and my guess is that he was using his darts for too long and needed to change. but the 2008 worlds was a strange tournament and a very forgettable one.

John Part might disagree  Smile

I would guess his grip position probably changed a bit and he needed to try something different.
Maybe even the change of venue also had something to do with it, the top form of everyone but John Part, Kevin Painter and to a lesser extent, Wayne Mardle, didn't show up.

If Taylor had beaten Mardle, Kirk Shepherd would not've stood a chance, but I think Part would've still won.
