Winmau Sniper, 23 gram – a mid-to-rear gripper’s review

Are you using long stems there WP? I would think they were a wee bit too long for a near 50mm barrel, and I would be scared of poking my eye out.

This is my current setup using shorts with standard flights

Medium stems, nothing special Jefferz. I throw from besides the face, so no problems like Gando Big Grin I sometimes wear glasses but also sometimes lenses, so throwing close to my face is not comfy.

I don't think I've seen anyone throwing from the side of their face before.

I got curious and had a look on YouTube. I don't think any of them do throw from the side, but I can see why it looks like that in the case of Barney because he pulls it down to a place way below his eye, and Cullen doesn't pull it far back at all.

Here you can see clearly(for example, around 1:01) that King pulls it up to his eye

Cullen (seen here at 23:01) is aiming as there is a line of sight between his eye and the board

I throw on the side of my face, sometimes on pull back the flight will graze my cheek... lots of people do

Well maybe I did not describe it well. And to be honest, never seen my own throw, only my stance, which is totally unremarkable

King is in front of his eye, but Cullen and even Adrian Lewis in that same video are on the side of their face... Lewis is similar to me where it looks like he hits his cheek from time to time with the flight.

I think I pull mine next to my cheek, slightly lower than the eyes. I tried the Anderson throw but used to bump my face a lot...

Thanks for this review, I have a similar grip to you and have had some problems with getting a consistent pick up with straight barrels and my gen 2 buntings, so am thinking something with more distinguished grip such as the sniper or the Steve beatons may be a good fit

The scallop is VERY pronounced though, so beware. You could try the Whitlocks if you want a more shallow scallop.

There's also the Winmau Snipers 22g version. The scallop is a lot gentler on that, as you can see here

Got my 23g yesterday, I'm such a rear gripper that it turns out I actually throw from behind the scallop. They're still a good fit though, the different grip zones along with the small ring gripped angled section at the back make for a consistent pick up.

That shark grip along the barrel is aggressive though, finger tips felt like they'd been playing guitar for hours after just a few ends.
