First thing to go is usually hard drives. Windows doesn't make checking HDD Smart status easy, but think a simplified version is available from the command line. I think the pc is getting itself ready for the tip somehow - not sure how long I've had it but must be around 10 years now lol

Windows doesn't make this clear cut or easy, but I prefer a boot / system drive, then one for user files. SSD for boot - mechanical (and big) drive for user files. Makes for a huge performance increase if done right...

For non-SSD - defragging doesn't hurt. Doesn't really hurt SSD's either. More like unnecessary wear and tear. But may not help regular drives much - depending on a few things.
